Koen'tiezst

Despite the rise of House Tuiz in the politics of the Elanthai Council, the small village of Koen'tiezst has retained much of the charm that it has exhibited for two millennia. The town square still holds a communal well where the villages many farmers and tradesmen pull up brackish water. The bricks of the square are still dyed with indigo when fired, making one believe that they are almost walking across the night sky. Surrounding the square are low pagodas, their wooden walls stained red and roofs made of the deeper red clay so common in the region, appearing almost like fires against the night sky. The village, lit by torches instead of lanterns at night, works hard to maintain this appearance as it unsettles visitors - even other Elynthi and has given rise ot the Orkish slave referring to it as the "Tenth Hell".

For all of its foreboding, most of its residents - free ones anyway - find their lives neat, tidy, and generally well-to-do. Farms surrounding the village provide the lumberjacks and carpenters for which the village is famous with ample food in the form of vegetables and rice, with proteins coming from the sea. Crab in nine-spice sauce, a famous delicacy form the city is an example of how its chefs combine local fare - the monstrous, ten-foot wide spiderlike ice crabs that appear on the frozen bay in the winter - with traditional Elynthi flavorings. The carpenters, working with deep red woods of the regions trees fashion everything from simple tables to exquisite dinnerware that is shipped across the Peninsula.
Directly in the village, along the eastern side of the main square, is the walled compound belonging to House Tuiz. They employ dozens on their staff, some of them in hereditary positions dating back centuries, as they continue to lead the Elanthai Council They have always paid well for loyalty and as such, there is little poverty in Koen'tiezst. There is also little dissent and those supporting a different great house quickly find themselves run out of town or swinging from a tree, their fur artfully flayed. Slaves, who outnumber Elynthi 5 to 1 in the village, are not so fortunate, spending most of their time in communal long houses. While clean, conditions are cramped in the longhouses and privacy is scarce. Discipline is extreme - there are no warnings or second chances for slaves.
