Jendredi

Queen of Sea and Storms

Jendred (Jenn-dread-ee), the lady of sea and air, is patron to artists and scholars, sailors and explorers. Her intellect is both mighty and capricious, leaping form thought to thought and inspiring both awful beauty and delightful terror. Her emotional torrents have been said to inspire artists to work for days without food or rest, inspired to create iconic sculptures, epics, and paintings only to have them collapse in death at the culmination of their masterworks. Her rage has churned the seas, lifting ships on the crests of huge waves of fury as a torrent of rain tears into the decks and swirling winds shred sails.

Despite the emotional peaks and valleys that the Lady of Many Moods travails, she has a large heart. Her brilliant, if chaotic ideas have rained down upon scholars to provide some of the most significant insights in history. It is said that her visions drove the Khadra to build the first Printing Press, that she visited Sal of Lore in his dreams and was was both as lover and muse to the great Reynard. Those sailors who have witnessed the red glow of dawn on perfectly still seas will swear her beauty cannot be surpassed, even by the exotic allure of her sister, Tiras.

History/Relationships

Jendredi is the daughter of Anderi and Tiras, inheriting the elemental power of the sun, tainted with the cold fury of darkness. The dichotomy - of both the power coursing within her and of her parents tumultuous relationship - is said to have driven her mad. She has, throughout history, swung from moods of lucid brilliance to those of raw fury. At times her peaks and valleys of have lasted centuries while at others they have changed by the minute, each rise and fall of her emotions manifesting in unconsciously on Tarien.

Dogma

When Jendredi feels inspired she is a torrent of thought - often seemingly disconnected but always with an underlying truth or insight. This instinctual intellect manifests in the arts, scholarship, and unparalleled glory of the sky. When at her lowest, however, her emotions overtake her intellect, spilling out in wind, rain, and storm.

Church/Priesthood

While most ships have a sailor who serves as a decan or other leader in prayer to the Queen of Sea and Storm, few can survive a long relationship with Jendredi. The intensity of her emotion and dark moods often tear into the minds of her priests, making the public to believe they are quite mad. Many of her most faithful fail to recognize their own relationship with their goddess, their belief and worship manifesting in works of brilliant scholarship, unparalleled works of art, or insane ramblings.

As a result, the priesthood of Jendredi is somewhat scattered. Shrines exist in many towns and villages and some of Tarien's larger cities, especially those along the common trade routes of the Inner Seas, boast small, self-sustaining temples that sponsor the arts and bless sailors. Clerics and priests are similarly individualistic, with little in the way of structure beyond their shared faith. Most shrines are tended by local patrons of the arts and the larger temples receive funding from both powerful merchants seeking safe passage for their vessels and lords seeking support theater troupes or academic pursuits.
"When Queen of Sea and Storm falls into despair, the gales that blow across the Sea of Storms scatter ships and smash beachside homes. It is then that the sublime beauty of painted canvas and spoken word is needed most, the art that pulls at our hearts and not our minds needed to appeal to the love deep within Jendredi's soul to pull her back and once again becalm waters."
