Bastion

Life and Culture

Modern life on Bastion has taken on a strange duality. The inhabitants of the planet still live amongst the massive, futuristic buildings, but everyday life, culture, and style is reminiscent of that of the historical past. Like everywhere else in the system, what functional technology remains is considered sacred, and heavily used but guarded jealously, and the gaps are filled with tools, crafting, clothing, and socio-cultural behaviours of a medieval nature.

With only a select few with the skills to upkeep what technology remains, the neighbourhoods of the rich and powerful tend to boast the most functional, clean, and well maintained buildings. As you get further from these districts, the functionality and appearance of the buildings falls away. Out here, many of the occupants of these buildings are forced to bypass or break open more advanced doors in order to access the living space, and things begin to feel more and more like slums, with people often living wherever they can find an empty room.

Some regions have begun to feel the touch of the Flock's hateful campaign against the government and technology. Their attacks on the cities and populations leave the areas they hit transmogrified, with buildings, technology, and even people turned to vegetation and plant material, leaving eerie spaces where organic and inorganic material are merged.

Geography

Once a lush continental world, Bastion has become greatly overpopulated by the various species of Hyperion, although it is primarily human. Its once vast oceans are now heavily drained. Some of the ocean regions are now simply dry seabeds. Others, while still holding salt water, are mostly drained of sea life taken to feed the people.

Its continents are overrun with megalopolis', heavilly fortified with giant walls that close them off, whose massive footprint and soaring towers can be seen clearly from orbit. The spaces in between are vast, empty landscapes containing the skeletons of old towns and farms, reduced to dry dirt. Many of these areas are still littered with the scars of orbital bombardment and invasion from the rebellion that felled the empire. A few regions designated as dumps have become massive landscapes formed from heaps of discarded debris and trash. A few bastions of nature remain, maintained by the druid cult known as The Flock.

Localized Phenomena

While most of the natural elements of the planet have been conquered, countered, or eliminated, the industrialization and overpopulation on the planet have had repercussions. A single, incomparable large ley energy storm, known as Abanok's Maw crosses the planet in staggered and random patterns, a phenomenon yet uncountered and one of the only natural elements that remains destructive to established civilization.

Climate

The climate of Bastion is similar to that of Earth, with equivalent seasonal cycles, etc.

Natural Resources

Much of the planets natural resources have been stripped, although Blacksteel Industries continues to operate a few functional, if low-output, mines on the planet, as well as massive salvaging operations of the Wastes.

History

Once the capital world for The Saikar Empire, Bastion is humanity's home world. Before their unification into a single empire, the kingdoms of humanity warred with each other regularly, until Vespasian I "The Bold" Saikar unlocked the ability to leave their world and take their place among the stars. During this time, humanity's population exploded, and what land remained outside of the cities was farmed to oblivion, along with the seas.

At the end of the rebellion led by Saber, Bastion was heavily bombarded, leaving scars of conflict across its surface. After the empire's fall, Bastion was one of the hardest hit worlds. During the interim between the empire and the coalition, Bastion struggled to feed its people, and many millions died. It was sustained only because of how well developed it became during the golden era.

Once the Coalition formed, they began expanding into the system once again, acquiring the food resources needed to sustain their population, as well as attempting to rebuild what had been lost.
