5122nd Imperial Army

When the Von Aurach Crusade was approved by the High Lords of Terra, time tested rituals and processes began to estimate what war materiel would be required to accomplish the Crusade's objectives.   Divinations and ancient, sacred algorithms declared that three army groups would be required, and so the 5122nd Imperial Army Group, along with the 5123rd and 5124th were created. Each was given its army badge and each army's Departmento Munitorum Regiment were founded to provide leadership and support for such large formations.   Lord General Napoleon Letizia became the chosen leader of the 5122nd and then he and his headquarters regiment shipped to the allocated segmentum bases to be brought together with his chosen forces. Once they were assembled, they headed into the Sleipner sector, with the target of liberating the Kulak System given to him by the Warmaster himself.   No sooner had the Kulak system been liberated and reclaimed for the Imperium, the Great Rift occurred and daemonic excursions, heretical uprisings and unprecedented warp storms wracked the system. Letizia's forces just about contained the theatre and kept control of the worlds they had won and finally, when the galaxy settled, it soon became apparent the 5123rd had been completely lost and only remnants of the 5124th remained. Until substantial reinforcements arrived, the entire Von Aurach crusade rests on the shoulders of Lord General Letizia and his regiments.

History

Founded at the start of the Von Aurach Crusade, along with the other army groups formed, Lord General Letizia and the 5122nd were given orders to break through the outer edges of the Sleipner sector and establish a staging point and secure foothold from where the army group could push forward into the sector, reclaiming one system at a time. Imperial Strategists and Tacticians had concluded that the Kulak system was a weakly defended system which could also provide a stable and secure fortress world for the Imperium to operate from.   Letizia led a lighting fast attack on the system's capital world, instructing all ships to exit warp as close as they safely could to the planet to reduce the Orks' ability to prevent planetfall. The plan works and no sooner had Battlefleet Scimitar transitioned into real spare, drop ships immediately left hanger bays ferrying troops and material to the planets surface in a non-stop deployment. A number of strategically important locations were chosen and given over to individual regiments to retake. One such location was Beachhead 21, which saw the Kuati 3rd Infantry Regiment spearhead an assault.   Here, a pre deployment raid performed by a detachment of Tempestus Scions, with the aim of sabotaging defence systems and sabotaging a number of routes to beachhead 21 had been repelled and so the Orks were able to retaliate with great numbers. Led by Colonel-Commissar Smith, the Kuati 3rd stood firm and repelled wave after wave of greenskins, allowing enough support material and armour be land and give the Imperials a significant advantage.   Following the liberation of Kulak, the 5122nd successfully secured the rest of the Kulak system, despite some smaller raids by the T'au and adopted Kulak as the army groups home and headquarters. Fort Forward was established as the seat of power on the planet and Lord General Letizia then, relying on momentum gained from his swift victories, directed the army group towards the Trax system, even coming into conflict with larger T'au forces in the process. However, no sooner had the army set foot on Trax, the Great Rift opened, and the army group found itself immediately on the defensive from itself as previously unknown cults started rebelling and latent psychic powers from across the breadth of the force began manifesting.   Regiments turned on regiments, as subversive cults saw this as the moment for their patron gods had prepared them for and rogue psychics went on rampages, decimating entire barracks with their raw, un-honed and newfound abilities. The Lord General personally led loyal regiments in purges of camps, putting one-time allies to holy fire and lasbolt; commissars followed suit alongside what Arbites had accompanied the Astra Militarum forces, executing psykers and heretics without question. All the while, astropaths died in the dozens- their minds overloaded by the sudden influx of warp energies into real space, or their sanity challenged with the shrouding of the Astronomican.   The army's survivors were bloodied, battered and exhausted with faith almost exhausted as the men, when it seemed all rebellions had been dealt with and the flames of heresy had been all but extinguished at the cost of millions of guardsmen and tonnes of materiel. Hope then arrived - the Blackness began to rescind and communication and warp travel began to be possible once more. System monitor ships picked up a warp signature approaching the Kulak system. Patrol vessels got on point, with weapons trained at the transition point, ready for an invading Chaos or Xenos ship, but instead they were met by a crimson red Strike Cruiser, Regent's Blade of the Blood Angels Chapter and together they brought with them news that soon spread across the system - A Primarch had been resurrected, the Imperium had been torn in two and Lord Commander Dante was Regent of what had become known as the Dark Imperium. Not only that, Dante had demanded the crusade was to be reinforced and supported to retake the sector and was sending resources to the 5122nd, now the only army group of the Crusasde- the 5123rd lost and the remnants of 5124th had been amalgamated into the 5122nd
