1st Kulak Commando Regiment

The 1st Kulak Commando Regiment is a regiment founded following the successful Kulak campaign against the T'au of the Kai'sho sept, using veterans of decimated units and regiments who have all survived where their peers have fallenand, as such, have an inherent expertise in fighting the T'au

Structure

The 1st Kulak Regiment was founded to provide the 5122nd with a small group of elite Tau-hunters, as opposed to provide another regiment to bolster the frontline of the 5122nd. To better facilitate their role of launching commando raids, reconnaissance patrols, assassination and sabotage missions and rescue missions, the regiment has been organised in a more practcial way. Led by a Colonel, the regiment's standard fighting unit is the kill team- a team of 10-20 veteran guardsmen who live, eat, train, rest and fight together.. The standard ranks to exist but to everyone in the regiment, only four ranks exist- newbie, Tau-hunter, Kill Team leader or Colonel.   Newbies are the newly inducted into the regiment. Although they come to the 1st as veterans of countless battles, such is the level of ability and expertise within the regiment, any newcomer to a kill team is considered little better than bait or an equipment mule, which has also led to other nicknames existing such as fishfood, dronebait.   As soon as a newbie has proved themselves in the field, they will gain acceptance within their kill-team and will be considered a brother whom others would give their lvies for and whom has earned the trust of the others. At this point, tattoos, badges, nicknames or other symbols of brotherhood will be bestowed on the new hunter.   When a kill-team goes into theatre, they are led by the elite of their brotherhood- the kill-team leaders. Once they may have held a more traditional rank with their home regiment, but now they are simply The Boss, Chief or any other title they have earned. Many are just referred to by their given nickname. No rank symbol is required or worn as any Tau-hunter worth their recaff always knows who is in charge. A Kill Team Leader is appointed by an open vote, with any ties being settled with a good, old fashioned bare-knuckle fight until only one is left standing. This is however, a very rare occurance as typically experience and veterancy shines though and leaders are naturally selected by each team   Thelast rank is that of Colonel. There is only every one colonel of the regiment and every knows who they are. To be "The Colonel" and the only one every referred to as "Sir/Ma'am" is a distinct honour and it takes a special person who has shown ability in the field and an aptitude to lead multiple kill-teams, to reach this position. They will answer only to two people- the Chief of Staff of the 5122nd or the Master/Mistress of Intelligence, depending on the task required by kill teams

Culture

The regiment is a very close knit brotherhood of survivors and as such they have little time for those from outside.   The Colonel fosters a culture of fraternity and encourages independent thought, which the Kill Teams need for their duty where success depends on everyone doing their given job and adapting to circumstances on the ground with little to no input from senior staff. A killteam will be deployed with a simple mission statement and objectives and whatever weapons and equipment they can carry, requistion or simply find. It is then up to the Kill Team Leader to come up with the plan of action.   This leads to members of the 1st Kulak being seen as a distant, strange group whenever they are garrisoned with units from other regiments, who keep themselevs to themselves. To have a Kill Team temporarily garrsioned at a base is seen by the garrison commander as a punishment and most will keep them quartered away from other regiments as they often bring unruliness and ideas of non-conformity with them, which all commanders fear spreading to other regiments.   For the commandoes themselves, they care not, for they have all survived nightmares many of the outsiders and think less of the more pomp regiments, full of boastful guardmen. Their brothers and sisters and their duty to the Emperor is all that matters nows.

History

Following the capture of the Kulak system form the T'au, many regiments had been decimated by the onslaught of the aliens' highly advanced and destructive technology. When he got the post-battle and logistics reports, Lord General Letizia was advised by Departmento Munitorum adepts to merge them with other regiments to give them a few more bodies for the next campaign.   Having previously served on Armageddon and having come across stories of the Armageddon Ork Hunter Regiments, Letizia wanted to see if the same could be done here. Knowing each survivor would have unique experiences of the T'au and proven tactics that have worked against them (or at least knew tactics that hadn't worked against them), he had all survivors brought together and arranged into small commando teams. Each team then tested by being given a single mission against the T'au, ranging from assassinating particular commanders right up to running pro-longed revenge and terror campaigns on those Imperials who had accepted "The Greater Good" in order to get them to revolt or warn others from followign suit.   With 85% of the kill teams returning successful and a further 7% completign their objectives but not surviving for extraction, Lord General Letizia persuaded the Departmento Munitorum Adepts to form the 1st Kulak Commando Regiment founded, to be held in reserve as a special operations force, only to be tasked by either his executive officer and Chief of Stafffor the 5122nd if the mission is of an overt nature to support a wider campaign or his Master of Intelligence if the task required was of a more surgical and clandestine nature
