Secambre

The city of Secambre sits on a grassy plateau overlooking a river. The area has a warm, dry climate of balmy winters and hot summers. Protective walls surround the city with entry gates to the north and southeast. The city has a defensible inner castle, home to the ruling lord, in its northwest corner. The north of Secambre includes older and more fanciful architecture while the southern sections are newer, meant to house the city's lower class residents and deal with trade. There are also several farms along the nearby river outside the city proper.
Secambre is well known for its art, especially in architecture. The city is host to many artisanal businesses which bring in commerce. This and Secambre's historical legacy bring in tourism, especially to its museums. Tunnels beneath the city were used to gather stone building material, but the mining has mostly ceased. Now, most resources come from the neighboring river, including clays for ceramics and painting, and the riverside farms providing crops and clothing material.
Secambre began as one of the first human villages on Alcao, slowly growing over the years. During the Caithilia Collapse, Secambre became a literal and figurative stronghold during the chaos that followed, constructing a castle keep. It was later conquered by the Domain of Kriemhild, choosing to surrender and let the current lord continue ruling as a subordinate. In the 1200s, Secambre became one of the major cities rebelling against Kriemhild, becoming one of the leaders of the Sciath Alliance. It is currently ruled by Lady Emilienne Secambre, the only living descendant of the Secambre family lineage.

Points of Interest

Arxem University

The Arxem University is located in the northeastern part of the city. It spans an area of buildings built for research and studying the arts. Notable buildings include a concert hall for musical performances, and a tower where magic is studied.

The Catacombs

As Secambre expanded, it was built overtop of old mining tunnels that have since been abandoned. In a few locations, these tunnels have been used to store the dead. Specific crypts contain small chambers within the tunnel walls to store people's bones once their body has been cremated. Wealthy people can often afford full coffins to store their relatives' remains, which are then stored in large dedicated chambers of the catacombs. However, those who can't be afforded a cremation or a coffin usually have their dead bodies thrown in secluded sections of the tunnels.

Cavetta Street

Cavetta Street runs from the square just outside the central castle keep and south through the city. It's known for being the best place for shops, including a wide variety of places to purchase textiles, foods, drink, pottery, and jobs from the local artisan guilds.

Donavia Museums of Art & History

This is a collection of museums in collaboration with, and in the same area as Arxem University. The most notable are an art museum displaying local architecture and paintings, as well as designs from the Cnaufrengi Wood, Anhowolke Plains, and Zhaotian Grasslands; and a history museum with collections from every continent.

Inns & Taverns

Being a very large major city, Secambre has many inns, taverns, and similar places for food, drink, and rest. This includes the Sleepy Sun Inn & Tavern, a well-known establishment local to the common section of the city; Marchard Brewery, a bar that brews its own beers and wines from the vinyards around Secambre; and Kasirstell Restaurant, a fancy restaurant known for regional dishes.

Lord's Keep

Set into the northwest corner of Secambre is the castle keep belonging to the city's ruling lord. It is currently the home of Lady Emilienne Secambre and her guards and servants. Designed for the city's long history of enduring conflicts, the keep is highly defensible, with thick high walls and a heavily guarded entry gate. The inner courtyards and halls of the keep, though small, have imaculate engineering and architecture.
