Boston
At the beginning of the war Boston is largely under military rule due to the unrest caused by the new acts put in place to punish the people of Boston for the Boston Tea Party of December 1773. There is quite a bit of unrest and tension leading up to the war. After the battles of Lexington and Concord in April 1775, Boston is filled with the British army during the Siege of Boston, and surrounded by colonial militia and the newly formed Continental Army. The British left the city in March of 1776.
