Nathaniel Hill
Nathaniel Hill (a.k.a. Nat)
Nathaniel Hill owns Nat. Hill's Coffee & Drink. He came to Boston from England after a family issue caused him to move to the colonies or be publicly disinherited. When he chose to leave, his father granted him enough money to make a start in the colonies and even paid for the ship to take him. A stipulation of his departure was that he have no contact with the family again. This allowed him to leave quietly "in search of something new."
Nathaniel is the main character in Let it Begin Here.

Personal history
Nathaniel chose to move to the colonies after his father found him in a compromising situation with a young man who worked for the family. The oldest of three sons, he was quietly disinherited and his father told anyone who asked that he had chosen to find a new life in the colonies, of his own choice. His other option had been to be publicly disinherited and forced to live with his private life being public knowledge, not to mention being forced to marry.
Having always enjoyed the atmosphere of coffeehouses, he decided to open one when he landed in Boston. The money his father had given him wasn't a great sum, but it was enough for him to buy an inn that was being sold cheaply and in a hurry. Nathaniel changed it to a coffeehouse and tavern, aware that there were other places for travelers to spend the night. On rare occasions, when found by someone desperate, he will rent out one of the empty rooms for the night.
When he first opened the business he advertised for one employee to help him. A young Frenchwoman, Marie Theriot, sought him out and he gave her the position almost right away. For almost two years it was only himself and Marie at the house, until her brother, Henri Theriot, came to visit her from Paris.
The story of what befell the three of them after Henri arrived is detailed in Book 1: Let it Begin Here.

Education
Nathaniel and his brothers had a private tutor for a basic education thanks to their father's money. He also learned to use a sword and musket when his father had briefly expected him to pursue a military career. Nathaniel had simply refused to ever follow that path, much to his father's frustration.
Employment
Owner of Nat. Hill's Coffee & Drink.
Morality & Philosophy
In general, Nathaniel has no issue with anyone as long as they have no issue with him or those he cares most about. At first, he didn't mind dealing with the British soldiers all over Boston, until they seemed to target him and his establishment. Once they had disrespected Marie, there was no longer a chance of him remaining neutral.
