Personal history
Jasper was born to parents who were enslaved in the city of Philadelphia. Their master was a friend of Robert Finley, who purchased Jasper and took him away from his parents at six years of age. In the Finley household he was paired with Levi, who he was told would one day be his master. Immediately he began helping with household chores and learning to become a manservant. He was also given an education so that he would be useful as a secretary for Levi, but not even the tutor hired by Robert Finley saw how talented Jasper's mind was for business. Levi noticed, however, and was in awe simply because he struggled with the skills he was being taught himself. Because Levi treated him better than anyone else in the household, Jasper took to helping him with his schoolwork. Being close in age, he and Levi soon became friends, but the situation Robert Finley had put them in as master and slave was something they were always aware of. After Robert Finley assisted Levi in relocating to Boston, he gave Levi ownership of Jasper. The following day, once his father had left Boston, Levi freed Jasper. They have continued as business and romantic partners since.

Jasper is Levi Finley's business partner in legal trade, smuggling, and supporting the privateer known as the Scot.
Mental Trauma
Living his entire life as a slave, until Levi freed him as an adult, has caused his outlook on life to be vastly different from that of Levi. There are times when it causes difficulty between them, but these are usually brief periods.
