Drennón Tzolagar I (enoːn ʦolæxɑr¹)

Tzolgarin Highness Drennón Tzolagar (a.k.a. Aenon Umu; Ānaahn t'Ys)

The Tzolgarin Mage-King

Drennón Tzolagar¹ is the hereditary title and ruler of the Tzolgarin Kingdom of Ys. House Tzolagar is a cadet of and related to the prominent house of Cheotl. There have been five dynasts thus far. It is rumored that the line of Tzolagars have been in fact one extremely long-lived person masquerading as subsequent generations. The founder, Drennón I, was said to be an ally or perhaps disciple of yeath-Qh'en dāQa the successful anarch of the Second Qh’énnish Rebellion.   He was born to the Yssian Noble House Cheotl in the city for which his house was named, Cheotlin. After a tumultuous early life, and a semi-exile to Academy Ummu a school for magi in Dhaoshee, under the mastership of a Ptarshakkian, Ptrened Ummu. He was given the Ptarshakkian name Aenon Umu (/enon umu/). It is said yeath-Qh'en was his colleague or a master at Academy Ummu.

His education complete, he returned and deposed his siblings and uncles from the power-positions in his house. Siezing control of his family's wealth and influence, he raised an army and began to consolidate the other communities around Cheotlin under his banner.   Eventually this lead to open war in Ys and the siege of Tlatl. By the time Tzolagar had conquered Tlatl, Garin, and Driosatlin²—later, divided into two satrapies, Iotlys and Xutwan—the other city-states largely capitulated. Only the easternmost cities remained independent. Those that resisted were brutalized and their ruling houses extinguished. Lastly he marched on the Citadel of Ysfet and its then pharaoh, Tra Achwat submitted without battle.   The lands of Ys were all united under Drennón Tzolagar, and the region became the Tzolgarin Kingdom of Ys, and each of the previously independent city-states became satrapies owing their fealty to its capital in Cheotlin. Leaders who did not bend the knee were executed; those that capitulated, became the satrap of their region, and were nominally allowed to keep their titles, ranks, wealth, and privilege, merely under the Tzolgarins.
¹The three main pronunciations of the tyrant's name in decreasing order of usage are:
1. /eno:n/ (Standard Yssian, Ysfeto, Callessai)
2. /tʔnoːn/ (Tlatli and Southern Yssian)
3. /ʤnoːn/ (Ipo and Northern Yssian)
Additionally, the regional Yssian dialects have their own variants: /ʤɛːnoːn/, /enoːn/, /ʤenoːn/, and /tɛːnoːn/

House Tzolagar is rendered /ʦolæxɑr/ consistently throughout Ys.

In Raachern the standard pronunciation is consistently /dɹɛnɔn ʦolægɑɹ/.

Drennón Tzolagar I was the warlord that conquered and unified all of Ys under one banner in the first century of the Qh'énnish Ascension.   The genitive form of his family name (TzolagarTzolgarin) to refer to the familial line that would rule his new kingdom ("the Tzolgarin Kingdom of Ys") well into the fifth century.   A weak-looking, frail and aged man, Drennón Tzolagar was most know for the huge ruby that is affixed in his head where his left eye once was.

²Driosatlin was a wealthy and large region and it fought hard and long to remain independent. It was not successful. The horrors of the Driosatlin campaign terrified the entire region and led directly to the acquiescence of Tra Achwat of Ysfet. The ruling family of the region were extirpated completely. Not even the infants born to minor branches of the house were allowed to live. In futherance of the region's subjugation, Drennón Tzolagar I placed two of his generals, Cheío and Xixu, as satraps and divided the region in two, forever separating certain clans and families. The new satrapies were called Iotlys—for General Cheío—and Xutwan—for General Xixu.
