Vont Hawk

Basic Information

Anatomy

The vont hawk is a small bird, with green, blue and teal flight feathers, with lighter blues and greys on the down feathers on the breast. It has a sharp black beak, very broad wings a short tail and grey-black legs.

Camouflage

Despite their bright plumage, when in flight, the vont hawk is almost invisible from below. They are experts at using the position of the sun and the shadows of the Hometree - Fenfolium Abordormusia to ensure their prey do not see them coming.

Behaviour

They are diurnal birds. They are often seen in pairs soaring with occasional lazy flaps in search of prey. They hunt from a perch or may also catch prey on the ground. To communicate with each other, these birds use a distinctive squeaking noise.
They prey on many of the creatures which call the swamp home, including the smaller fish, the Kislop Frog and Mud Wobbler Crabs.

Where To Find Them

There was a time when there were over a million vont hawks living on P'Ache Micro, and they were commonly found in the swamps of Nuskan. This was true in 271 PT, when the Primian/Macran treaty was signed.
Unfortunately, over the years, the destruction of much of their habitat and the impact on the water from the ocean-based mineral extraction have made their numbers drop, there are now only a few thousand on the whole planet and none live near Nuskan.

Place in the World

Macrans

Macrans are the primary sapient species on P'Ache Micro and are the vont hawk's primary predator.
While there is not much meat on the bird, historically, they were still hunted, sometimes for the meat, but more often for the feathers and other parts of the bird.

Efficient Predator

The vont hawk is admired by the Macrans for their efficiency as predators. They are extremely fast and are considered difficult creatures to hunt. As a result, there was a time that their feathers became something of a prized possession and were turned into earrings. These earrings gained cultural significance when they were worn by the rebels during the The First Micro Rebellion and the The Second Micro Rebellion.
