The Merchant League

As the title states, a merchant league heads Frisia. A quasi-democratic merchant oligarchic system, there are over hundred or so merchant families all across Frisia, all of which have a say in the government in some part. This is the democratic portion of the government. Each merchant family that wishes to take part in this assembly must tithe a certain percentage of their yearly profit to the League. This amount obviously varies greatly with the wealth and success of each individual house. Each family is also required to supply a certain portion of the youth of the areas governed to the army or navy as well.   The assembly of these families called the Vergadering. The Vergadering meets ever year in Margraten to discuss politics and to address issues with the League and its members. When a law or mandate is put up to the League for review, each merchant family receives a number of votes proportionate to the amount of money tithed to the League that year. As such, the wealthier the family, the more power one wields in the assembly. More often or not, the smaller families usually gravitate to supporting a certain side frequently and the larger families tend to attempt to garner support for their side to attract the votes of the smaller families.   In fact, the few large merchant families are given a specific title and given more privileges than the others. These top twelve merchant houses are known as the Gebiederpends. They receive the added benefit of being able to overturn an unfavorable vote by calling for an additional voting process within their own twelve members. Many of the smaller families disdain this practice and the Gebiederpends rarely excise this right. Being a member of the Gebiederpends gives the family and its members great respect throughout the League. The top eight or nine Gebiederpends has rarely shifted for years as these merchant families are firmly entrenched with their wealth and many of the smaller families have a hard time meeting or exceeding the sheer volume of money that these members generate each year.
