Lionkin
Lionkin are fairly simple to their name. They are lion-like creatures, standing upright in a mostly anthropomorphic bipedal format of good intelligence. Akin to their animal counterpart, they are feline mammals, and even adopt a lot of behaviors such as cat-naps, retractable claws, purrs, and tongue cleaning. In a meta-sense, they were introduced as more of a joke from their simple naming mechanism, to quirky or crass mention of cultural norms such as casual incest, or odd popping punishments. However they became more defined as a culture struggling for a place between stupid and intelligent as they slowly start to make trans-universal exchanges. Their Cross-Discovery Association Metric rating is easily a Token, though some varieties are more adapted than others. They are mostly harmless to others unless provoked, and are too dim to thoroughly exploit visitors, but can still offer trade, ideas, or physical assistance with ease.
Over the years there's a few types developed. Each are designated a more detailed ethnic category, but in quicker summary...
- Mainlander: Default. Ordinary Felyran lionkin, across most of the planet. They hold to a lot of the species' hallmarks, and are sentimental on some properties like gendered roles and a perceived history of k'siiva gods. They're also the most common sold to aliens, or in Vanguard recruitment.
- Pawslovic: Islander origins. Gentler nature, and love music/dance. Physical differences are more commonly sandy-tone pelts, "volcano" black-maned lords, and lionesses develop big butts. This group is targeted by sycore to uplift and spread across the omniverse for their own ulterior motives, and their females are often desired in domestic trade with mainlanders.
- Lyspheran: Lionkin taken to Lysphera by gryllions. They came in an ancient period and tend be distant from native development customs, and more trained and stern under instructions and needs for helping gryllions.
- Felidaric: Later lionkin (and zekani) following skonorts to Eldaras. Fell in love with their food culture, and eroded patriarchal & servant roles to adapt. Lower males tend to be more equal and well-fed, and often take paying aid jobs. Females tend to be a bit taller, and its much more common for them to grow fat or 'cuddle-figured'. Their alien lifestyle granted quicker and more ready access to space travel, and they're the most prominent to find off-world.
- Hybrid: Being of a high libido and frequently offered in wedlock at a price, its not unheard of for lionkin to be a little more entangled with other cat races and find a compatible after-effect. Often these come from cheap mainlander lionesses sold off, or felidarics mixing with tigiren. They often have partial physical traits, and a mild chance at losing their combusting stomach vulnerability, but often keep elements like their chance of a mane.
Basic Information
Genetics and Reproduction
Lionkin sometimes watch over their genetics carefully with regards to trying to give males healthy manes. However females are more common at birthrate, roughly accounting for 66% in most records. Females tend to have 2-4 kittens (up to 6, rarely), after a short 3-4 months of pregnancy. Kittens are distinguished from cubs, with kittens being more of the closer newborns that actually closely resemble real wild cubs in all but size and developing muscle/bone formations. Yet they need plenty of attention and time to develop. Cubs are the childhood period, between ages 2-7, essentially when they are talking and doing more of their own walking and learning.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Primarily carnivores in ancient teachings, they've become more accustomed as omnivores across their most recent millennium. A lot of their wealthy are actually just farmers with good land, and they've developed habits and cuisines around plants that include potatoes, grain, milk, greens, and juice. However they still eat large quantities of what equates to pork, goat, and beef. Poultry is more of a rare dish. Milk stout, creamed milk, sweet red wine, and honey-rye liquor are all favored beverages, with tea actually considered more of a poor and cub-friendly substance of choice.
Its been suggested portions heavily differ on the class and role of the citizen. Defenders eat mostly small protein rich meals, and the serfs sustain on less. However the wealthy from farmers, to major political figures, tend to eat in excess and feed up their wives and concubines to more corpulent norms over numerous sporadic feasts to prove their worth and affections. Yet they describe their stomachs as sensitive to mounding pressure, and its become a darker custom to over-feed less wanted people for the sport of making them implode. Some chemistry is applied in quicker sessions, like large quantities of "Spring-dough" which is a dough that quickly expands with liquids like milk.
Civilization and Culture
Beauty Ideals
Males are judged for their rich mane, and contrary to most societies, are the ones that strive for beauty and vanity in styling their scalp. They will be the ones likely using braids, jewels, and embellishments to appear attractive and respectable. Oddly enough this actually applies heavily towards other males and general society, as they have most of the say in getting whichever females they desire with less of their opinion necessary, but its important to them to 'show-off' or seem respectable to other males or even gain respect from superiors. Still females are mostly happy with richer manes, and also tend to extend worth to possessions, paw care, and a male's excess weight. Darker and complex fur is also sometimes more respected, but of less of a rule. Males without strong manes are considered more ugly, and eugenics tend to try and keep them isolated in more serf type classes. Males are also unattractive for taking on scars, or other signs of physical labor and abuse.
Females are attractive on merits between their poise and obedience, to more physical standards like their eyes and body curves. If the female earned or was conscripted armed service, they are expected to be fit and tough when a male specifically seeks such a lioness. Contrary to a male, their fur color is sometimes preferred to be more of a rich golden, but darker fur females tend to ink over more vibrant colors and body art for flare. Closer to bleached/albino fur tones are the least desired, but sought by a few. Rare spotting is of preference, but may be revolting or attractive to some courting males. Males are modestly less picky on the whole, as its casual to obtain more than one partner, and sometimes they diversify their partners like having separate accessories. A female may also become an extension of the male's worth, and typically gain more jewels, body ink, and weight as long as the male has the ability to spoil them. A more decorated or fatter female tends to be considered taken, as result, and may wear a mark of their mate's as if to promote a show of his prosperity. However obesity can also be a drawback in an indirect way of making them lazy and lose their poise. Courtship Ideals
Males tend to be the lead decision-makers. Between young, a father may arrange a cub's marriage over before she's fully grown. They tend to treat them as things to sell or gain favor, and an appointed cub is groomed to be taken care of for her future mate's respect where the payment/honor will be delivered in full when she's ready.
More free females tend to either stay in the clan, or wait on a male's call. If a male likes one, he may choose to submit a consent paper to the best officials, and will begin a process where he meet or write to the father, and impress the female to consent. A female's rejection isn't a consistent value, but they often tend to hold more weight against poorer serfs. In worst scenarios, they have the right to strike a male which can lead to humiliating flesh wounds on the nobles, so its often ideal to please them, even if they're often taught to be accepting & obedient. Another male can disrupt the process, by either competing to over-impress the female, or simply being the father or superior other to say no. If pursuit is still sought, they can sometimes challenge the other's honor, which can lead from anything from a show of wealth, to more physical turmoil. Wedding may also denote a difference between wife, and concubine, with concubines behaving more like guards or servants with some lusted flare, while wives are the ones supposedly most groomed and made to bare kittens. Female serfs are sometimes treated at equal with concubine, but if they get pregnant from the wrong male, the properly wed male actually gets to keep the children, sometimes bringer "better" genetics into the family unless the lord makes a deal to buy their biological child off them.
Furthermore, the richest of males can simply have a calling on certain single's, especially applying to those that have lost their father for contact and may be bound by more of their own whim. Those that receive a broader call are appointed to line up, and may be tested by their poise, speech, or more abrasively just physically measured by their jaw, shoulders, bust, and hips. Once accepted, a lioness is welcomed in more quickly. Many customs may suggest the lioness is marked somewhere with an ink signature, or even rarely a fiery brand, to denote them to a clan or noble. The wealthy males with a harem of more pampered females, are given the nickname of a Noble's Cuddle - often suggested that they're surrounding by chubby nuzzling wives.
Relationship Ideals
Males are the ones doing the paperwork, estate running, and manage things like the serfs that serve under him. They hold the regal exchanges, and manage most possessions, even sometimes using their own young or mates as bidding tools. They are to care for a female's well-being, keeping her fed, sheltered, and making sure she proves to carry herself in a way he deems is honorable. Between serfs, if a male is able to court and wed, his duties are mostly to still serve his lord first, but to bring down scraps of food and currency for his family, and is the core provider. Its more common for a male to take up more recreational arts of painting and music, while females and only some male serfs take up the physical sports.
Thought to be a similar pattern from evolved lions, the females are actually the physical defenders, despite being mostly under-valued in society. They make up the backbone of warriors, and in wedlock, are supposed to be the ones that defend a male's property first and foremost. As such, among their absolute entitlements, are any weapons and armor in the family. Sometimes when males fight on their honor, it is a female they choose to represent themselves. Wives are supposed to eventually breed, and raise kittens, making sure they ascend as healthy cubs and into adulthood. Concubine, are more often distinguished in wealthy families as the ones that need to be sharper and more objectively protective, but the lines can be blurred a bit. Female serfs are also somewhat complicated, as the lord owner will sometimes treat them at equal with his concubine, but they tend to serve a similar purpose of making sure their likely male equal is defended, but may controversially stand down or engage in lordship disputes.
Average Technological Level
In a strange flux. Their native technology is very old world, with houses of clay for the commonwealth, and more elaborate stone and ivory tones for the major cities and better off. In a rough sense they'd feel at home between older Greek and Egypt stylings. However a lot of further out tampering has been done from older times, including old visits from late-imperial K'siivas. They have been granted a sparse set of energized weaponry, electricity generators, and have eventually even come into contact with travelers of industries like Sycore that have established market places like Nugget's Queen. They have since developed abilities of television, grid-side vehicles, sparse omniverse travel methods, and places are even developing their own locally isolated internet and computing networks.
