Carceri
Carceri is one of the Lower Planes, with a slight tendency towards lawfulness, though it is primarily ruled by a pair of despotic Demon Lords. Traitors, backstabbers, and those who enact violence against the vulnerable find their souls suspended within impenetrable iron cages that hang over Carceri's lakes of acid, slowly lowering until they are submerged and burned. Outside of the Acid Caverns, it is a gray land under an ashen sky, a place without hope, passion or joy. None can escape Carceri short of a wish or a divine intervention.
Within the Acid Caverns, the Dark Prince Graz'zt walks among the damned, offering them a chance at pleasure and escape if they are willing to prostrate and humiliate themselves before him. When they have groveled and pleaded enough, he releases them from their cage with an obsidian key and leads them to the Demon city of Zelatar, within his secret dream-realm of Azzgurat. Here, there appears to be fine food and wine, captivating entertainment, and hedonistic pleasures of the flesh, all offered by demons in many forms who present a false air of comfort and welcome to the mortals among them. However, those who partake soon find no pleasure in these comforts—only an unceasing yearning for more and more.
Eventually, within the winding streets of Zelatar, you find yourself descending into the Endless Maze of Baphomet. It is a torturous, twisting dungeon of mirrors, traps, endless hallways, and half-submerged staircases that lead ever deeper into the gloom. Baphomet rules the maze, surveying it from the top of a ziggurat whose very name would inflict madness on a mortal to hear. It is said, in whispered tones, that somewhere in the maze lies a secret portal to the Liminal Plane—the only possible respite from the endless cycles of torture that await those doomed to Carceri.
