The Child – Episode 3

The villains lose the path.

On the edge of the Wombwood, there was no recourse for the villains save to walk into the forest. There was some discussion between them – should they search for a guide, should they simply walk into the woods – but they could reach no consensus. A short way beneath those boughs, they could not help but notice the strangeness of the forest – the stillness, the quiet, the writhing of roots beneath their feet, the way the trees seemed to rearrange at every new glance.
In short order, they became lost. Petrified of failure, Erick volunteered to lead them but was quickly cowed by the effort. Next Desdemonia, in her wood elven guise, attempted to compel the trees to lead them to the Hidden Palace but was likewise unsuccessful. When neither Agnoment nor Dr. Hughbert have any luck, it was Alizabeth who noticed that they were no longer alone. There was suddenly an elf standing among them.
A member of the Cymbia border guard, he exhorted them to leave the woods immediately. When they claimed to be diplomats – and diplomats from Yogoth, no less – the ranger instantly became violent, offering them one sentence to explain why he shouldn’t order his companions to fire. Activating their Dark Gift, the elf revealed – through subtle performance – that he was actually a spy. When Dr. Hughbert made their case, the elf agreed to escort them to Vaer Quethrolas.
Along the way, Desdemonia invaded the elf’s personal space, Erick and Agnoment struck up a theological discussion and Hughbert debated whether Alizabeth needed a new left ear. Before long, the party arrived at the base of five ghost-white trees and was informed, by their traitorous escort, that they stood on the threshold of Vaer Quethrolas, the Hidden Palace of Cymbia.
