Giant

Why do [the humans] call us "Giant?" Well, because we are the oldest, wisest, most powerful, and most exceptional people of this world. To them, we have dominion over the earth and can send their cows and crops withering at the lift of a finger. Our power and knowledge represents the set of all they have striven to become.   And, yes, we are much taller than they are.
--The Poet Kaktes, an Ebigan, in a letter to his son
The term "Giant" refers to an enormously varied collection of Gauthran people and cultures--that is, they have existed from before the arrival of Helenaphe. The term is applied to those extant Gauthra.   Most Giants are generally large though the smallest of them (the Mott) are far smaller than the average human. Their history is long and vast and common ancestors are difficult to pinpoint and trace. But it is known that the Giants were the first human-like intelligent life on Earth. Indeed, when the gods created the first humans, it was the Giants they were modelled after physically and who gradually also shaped their societies and ways of life.   The most notable difference that sets Giants apart from humans is their connection with the Earth through the Earth Impel. They bear a natural intuition for its workings and tap easily (and in some cases subconsciously) into it to ascertain predictions of weather, blessings of fertility and wards from sickness, and even sorcery rivaling the Hekkauthran magic. You will never hear a Giant of any race complain about bodily pains or the whims of the seasons (though humans seem to be unable to resist this urge).   The subraces and cultures of giants are extensive and documenting them all would take volumes. Of the prominent, widespread species with significant documented cultural and physiological detail, there are at least eleven, listed below.
