Earth Impel

Also called the Earthwill, Earth Impetus, or the Earthen Power or Verve. It is referred to in the works of the Drin Honne as the "Mindreland Power" or the Nonn Erdo Chimberex (abbreviated as N.E.C. and Nec in some works) and given a thousand other names in the languages of the Hekkauthra, Gods, Gauthra, and other peoples of the world. It is recognized in stories and works of science alike and is inherently known by every creature whether consciously or subconsciously.   Earth Impel is a fundamental energy that imbues all life originating on New Haven, from the Giants and ancient Oozoriand to the very plants and animals. The Humans, created by the Gods from the muck and ash of the earth, too bear some of this power, though unintentionally. It is the Gods themselves and those wanderers from other worlds who are the only beings without it.   It cannot be created nor destroyed, only transferred from creature to creature (birth), creature to earth (death), and earth to creature (growth). It cannot be isolated and is eternally bound to the earth and its creatures. This binding is referred to in the works of the Drin Honne as Nonn Difero (again, N.D. or Nd). Sorcerers siphon and channel Earth Impel, but must capture and torture the things that carry it to do so.   Though the Hekkauthra undoubtedly exhibit the highest "levels" of Earth Impel, plants also [hold strong] in this regard and trees especially so. For example, a skunk skulking through the underbrush is dwarfed in energy by a fishtail fern towering above it. But a young mahogany tree standing at half the fern's height contains easily ten times as much. This exponential behavior observed in trees specifically is called Nonnded Ichobex by the Drin Honne.   The consequences of Nonn Difero varies greatly from species to species. The Hekkauthra use it willingly and expertly to achieve their aims. Some beasts are capable of using it as well and, as mentioned, sorcerers make use of "borrowed" energy from their captives. More often, the effects are incidental and spurious, occurring without clear cause or reason. It is also difficult to distinguish if the habits and abilities of some creatures arise from this power or some other source. For example, even the Drin Honne debated over whether the mesmerizing dances of bees come about through Earth Impulse or from some learned, evolutionary behavior. Many creatures and plants posses too little Earth Impulse to have any effect upon the world at all. Such effects are called Nonnded by the Drin Honne are were a topic of great interest to them.

Animals

Three prominent texts exist on the study of Nonnded of animals and intelligent beings: the Drin Honnish Cora Umsebbif (a text whose original has been long lost), the Study of Gauthran Power by the professor Jandey Ghumatt at Menguir, and the controversial passages of the Inhurdoedda, the holy text attributed to Knimehaud, which describe in exaggerated detail the “unholy” abilities of Gauthran creatures and how to counteract them.   TODO

Trees

Nonnded of trees manifest in a variety of ways in the soil, the air, plants and animals, and the very surrounding space. On the subject, there are countless texts, many of which are of scientific repute, unmarred by the frantic claims of god-fearing monks and acolytes. Arguably the most important text exists in the grand New Orieli Library, The Hierarchy of Trees, authored and edited by over twenty professors, including the much regarded Durte Sulyha.   Below is a summary of the major categories presented in The Hierarchy sorted from the most energetic to the least.

The Magnolias

The rare magnolia is thought to be the oldest of the trees (the spot is contested with the Ginkgoes). The primitive natures of these trees are clearly the reason for their immense stores of Impel and the Magnolias are hundreds of times more powerful than the average Cypress. Like with most species, the Power concentrates in the flowers and fruiting bodies, though for Magnolias it is even more so with hardly any found in the leaves and woody portions.
The Nonnded of magnolias is significant though highly variable on its surroundings. In a natural environment, nearby plants and animals exhibit greater alacrity and alertness. Animals denning near the trees are guaranteed bountiful litters and long lives, intelligent beings included. For this reason, magnolias also bear the names of Boon Tree, Fertility Tree, and similar titles.   Magnolias planted purposefully have a lesser such effect and sometimes exhibit a destructive effect on manufactured environments. The famed magnolias planted along the lanes of the city of Fanfare caused the streets to crack and warp and their acidic fallen flowers and seeds, crushed into the cobbles by the wheels of relentless wagons and carriages, ate away at the stones and turned the smooth streets ragged and uneven.   Most impressive is the effect Magnolias have when felled. Whether by natural cause or a heedless treecutter, the falling of a Magnolia is always accompanied by a small but fierce storm. The storm may follow immediately or many hours later and is recognizable by a lack of rain, vortexes of wind, and twirling clouds not unlike the milky white flower of the tree itself. The storm passes over the site of the fallen tree and dissipates shortly after. These storms have names in many languages but are most well-known by the Ashborn who, in reference to Anthemir’s love of Magnolias, call them Mendurrath meaning “[??].” Most terrible is when such a squall fells additional magnolias which summon more squalls of even greater strength. In 1644, such a chain event occurred when the builders of the city of Alifathil, in clearing the land, unknowingly burned a stand of young magnolias and unleashed a storm that hung over the Canterlund for a nearly decade.

The Ginkgoes

The Ginkgo grows only in the northeastern most peninsula of the continent in the heart of the nation of Manatz. It is prized by its people as a religious and cultural icon and is also claimed to be the grandmother of all trees. Unlike the Magnolias whose Nonnded affects the environment around it, the Gingko's Nonnded is inert unless parts of the tree are ingested.
The leaves and stems heighten the senses and enable a brief clairvoyance of several moments ahead. Curiously, animals who nibble the leaves make better use of this effect than humans who double think the transient visions and stumble over themselves trying to make sense of the phenomena. Making use of the leaves requires practice and an instinctual focus such as that demonstrated by the Guardia Manatz.   Ingestion of the bark [??]   And lastly, the fruits give a clairvoyance like the leaves but much longer lasting and further in scope. The effect is similar to ingestion of the leaves and unwary travelers have perished from cliff falls and broken bones while under the fruit's disorienting spell. Those trained in it can perceive events as far as a decade in the future though such visions are always constrained to the current location. Almost always, consumption of the Gingko fruit is followed by intense nausea that fades in a few hours.

The Cypresses

The Cypresses are the first group in this list capable of communication amongst themselves in the specific, codified language of the Hekkauthra called Hekktang. Trees with this ability (which include the Cedars, Pines, and other conifers) distribute Power amongst themselves and act almost as a single unit. A stand of such trees can have a Nonnded several times greater than that of even the largest lone Magnolias.   Trees capable of Hekktang "speak" with the Hekkauthra in a sense, typically through ingesting the leaves. Few Hekkauthra can respond, however, among them being the Kanko and the mature Kethloe Undynes.

The Mahoganies

Mahogany trees are called the Trees of the Dead as they exhibit a strong tendency to Bind the newly dead to them, hindering the process of reincarnation. Those that die near mahoganies will not decay or do so very slowly as their essence is drained by the tree. Though this effect happens to an extent in all plants and trees, the mahoganies are notorious for it. It is not uncommon to find piles of dead animals and detritus scattered about the base of the trees and to hear the whispers of the dead near its boughs. Though prized for its excellent wood, the wood of older mahoganies is "cursed" with these bound dead resulting in furniture and houses that move and whisper with minds of their own.

The Cedars

Another conifer known for its Hekktang. This one is prized by the Hekkauthra for its resin which serves as food and utility. Thus Cedars are most often the nests of fairies and nymphs which lead to many stories of the trees as holy or blessed.
