Abar
Growing up in Frea, from a young age Abar was fascinated with the ocean and seafaring. His grandfather Arden was a huge inspiration for his choices and his ideals. From the way he talked to the way he acted Abar did everything he could to try and live up to his grandfather's name and to become half the man that he was. At the age of 8 his mother [Delilah] and father [Airon] separated due to his father being away at sea far too much. During that time Abar went through a rather tough period of self discovery where he had to decide whether or not he wanted to stay at home with his mother or join his father on the ocean.
Upon choosing to join his father at sea and to spend his adolescent years sailing the oceans and exploring the world he realised just how much he truly had to live up to with his name. His grandfather being the accomplished sailor that he was shone light upon just how difficult it would be to live up to him, which frustrated Abar until at 13 he had a chance to sit on the bow of his grandfather’s ship the Angel’s Auger and talk about what it is that he wanted to accomplish with his life at sea. During this conversation was the time that Abar received the best piece of advice that he ever received from anyone. Which had even more weight to it being that it came from the man that he idolised as a young boy.
After talking about how he wanted to be just like his grandfather and how he wasn’t sure he could live up to his name and that he felt like he would never earn the opportunity to be a Duncan. Arden turned to him and said “You need not earn your name, only your keep” which is a quote that all throughout life has stuck with Abar and he has always had something with him with that quote either written or engraved upon.
Only a few months after this his grandfather was killed at sea when his ship was raided by pirates and his ship was badly damaged in the process. Abar was back in Frea at this time spending some time with his mother and was devastated by the news. Upon discovering what had happened Abar and his father Airon retrieved the wreckage of the Angel’s Auger and over the next 19 months rebuilt it with the intent of just using it as a family vessel in honor of Arden. When falling upon hard times they eventually came to the decision to begin using the ship as a merchant vessel again as it was what Arden would have wanted.
At 16 after having been at sea as a merchant sailor for the past year and a half Abar developed a love for the singing and the comradery that came with the sailor’s all singing together. For years he would continue to lead the crew in song and eventually began to desire exploration of more than just the seas. Upon returning home at the age of 20 to Frea he came to discover that his home had been sold and that his mother had moved to Keate. Not wanting to risk intruding on her new life he never went to seek her out and took the opportunity to purchase his childhood home with all of the savings he had from his excursions with his father.
