Weaver's Road Organization in Mendala | World Anvil

Weaver's Road

Established early in the TS era, Weaver’s Road stands as the third oldest independent city in the world. Over the millennia, it’s grown from a small market town to the most popular marketplace in the world. It is a central hub of trade and goods as well as a popular tourist destination, boasting high class hotels, casinos, spas, resorts, and other amenities.   Weaver’s Road’s longevity is due to the presence of a powerful city core. The core boasts a protective shield that can withstand guardian level mentus as well as most long-range attacks, and has various other protections built into it.

History

Weavers Road was founded in 705 TS by five prominent merchant families: the Stokenshires, the Kellermans, the Cartsons, the Goodworks, and the Millersmiths. The five families wanted to own the land and buildings that their stores were housed in and came up with the idea of building a small merchant-focused town that could function as an all-in-one location for all manner of crafts and goods. Combined, they were 31 members total who pooled money and resources to build the town just south of the Midlothiac Forest.   They also commissioned an expensive and complex translift network that could bring in customers from all four continents. This was a risky investment, but they figured that the only way to ensure a thriving customer base was to make it accessible to as many people as possible. The original translift network connected fifteen different locations which eventually expanded to thirty before being decommissioned in 3139 TS when quickening completely took over as the means of transport to the city.   The Stokenshires were the main founders of the city. Not only were they the highest financial contributors, but they were responsible for obtaining the land that the city would be built on, as it was originally occupied by several large estates that belonged to families they were acquainted with. In addition, it was through the Stokenshires that the fledgling city obtained a city core, one of only a few made in the TS era. The Stokenshires used their connections with the dwarves of Glorandor, the elves of Ellenon, and the Daughter of the Sun to help facilitate the creation and installation of one of the most powerful city cores ever created. This would guarantee that the town would be safe from attack.   Weavers Road slowly expanded over the centuries as more and more merchants saw the benefits of having a storefront in the popular market town. Town expansion was slow since the founding families were originally very particular about what merchants could join their ranks. Eventually, around 2100 TS, standards were codified and were significantly less strict than the previous requirements. This was because the Merchant Council felt it was better to let the free market decide what merchants had the talent and skill to compete in the cutthroat marketplace.   Around 2500 TS, the city began expanding its offerings to include resort and entertainment facilities, making it a high-end vacation spot as well as a shopping and tourist destination. In the early 3000s TS, as desert crystal became even more popular due to a breakthrough in quartz refinement, Weaver’s Road expanded even further as many people used the town as a jumping off point to enter the Crystal Sands Desert.   Eventually, the city stopped expanding once it reached a certain size. This was because the city core, though powerful, was only designed to cover a set area as the original founders never dreamed that it would become a large city. The town’s population hovers between twenty and thirty thousand and there has rarely been any new construction since the end of the TS era. Despite this, Weaver’s Road continues to be one of the major market hubs in the world, boasting top quality goods in a variety of areas.

A Secret Legacy

Completely obscured by history is the true purpose of why Weaver’s Road was built. Though five merchant families went into the endeavor, it was spearheaded by the Stokenshires, who combined provided around fifty percent of all of the funding. The hidden agenda of the Stokenshires was to create a safe haven for the Daughter of the Sun in the event that her life was in danger and she no longer had access to Sun Mountain. This was why the city core was obtained and created with enough power to even withstand a guardian.   Only the Stokenshires know of this legacy, and they have taken great pains to hide the city’s true purpose under the veneer of the market town. In addition to other provisions added to the charter that guarantee the legacy of the founding families, an additional mandate was added stating that the Stokenshires would always have access to the city core. This was to ensure that if needed, they had the ability to access hidden functions within the core that could be used to protect the city if the Daughter of the Sun was in danger.

Politics & Government

Because the population of the city is 90% merchants and their families, the government that was formed is a type of meritocracy where the most successful and connected merchants run the city. The Merchant Council runs all of the various aspects of the city, and new members are selected by the council itself as people are needed or when someone retires. Council members can be voted on or off by a 2/3 majority vote from the existing members. The council must have a minimum number of members which is updated periodically and currently stands at 45. There is no maximum number of council members and typically there are anywhere between 70 and 100 members at any given time.   The leader of the council, the Chairman, is elected by the council itself and they maintain their leadership until they retire or there is a 3/4 majority vote by the council members to oust them. Though corruption in the Merchant Council can occur, the system of checks and balances among the merchants keeps it from persisting for lengthy periods of time.   The Founding Charter of Weaver’s Road dictates that members of the five founding families are automaticly made members of the council. However, they too can be voted off the council by a 3/4 majority vote. Only three of those families, the Stokenshires, the Millersmiths, and the Goodworks still exist to this day. This is mainly because all three families are registered under the Cognomian Clause of the International Marriage and Family Act.
