Humming Stone Material in Melyria | World Anvil

Humming Stone

Mineral

Just recently, miners of Zaetron Derraz found most unusual find in one of the mines owned by the House Voidthrone. Clusters of blue, faintly glowing crystals filled the walls of the cavern, resonating small hum to echo off the walls. This magical stone has proved hard to gather and is currently researched by scholars of Zaetron Derraz, Numen Hoop University and Stone Hall Archives.

Find has proved to particularly mysterious, and potentially deadly. Nicknamed as "The Humming Stone", this material is still under investigation for its possible uses and dangers involved with handling it.

In the game, the mystery of humming stone has been appearing in side plots with May'chalithra Palefury, grand daughter of Alauraeva Voidthrone as well as in games of Kerymis Donaevel.

Thanks to May's keen eye, Tarlyn Voidthrone's life was saved from assassin that was to kill Tarlyn and take his notes about the stone, and she saved servant boys to be shred to pieces by the stone's soundwawes.

Kerymis would make small contributions on the research of the stone in Numen Hoop University, but has since put his attention else where.

Properties

Material Characteristics

The mineral is found in clusters that are formed by azure blue crystals. Crystals are not particularly light or heavy, and single crystals can be anything between 5 to 25 cm tall, and no bigger than a 3/4 of the length in their circumference on the thickest part of the mineral. Material is slightly translucent, yet not completely see-through, and the surface of the crystal is quite clear with few occasional grooves.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Crystals can have a faint glow in them, and have a vague magical charge distinguished from them. Crystals resonate with the sounds around them, starting to make a low humming sound from their core when exposed to some sounds. Exact parameters of the type of sounds that activate the effect are still undiscovered. After an unspecified time of exposure, hum will grow louder, and the crystal starts to shoot out thin pulses of sound wawes, sharp as needles, that can break skin and cloth, destroy glass and push back items on the firing zone.

Geology & Geography

Currently, the only known vein of the crystal has been found in mines near Zaetron Derraz. Mines belong to House Voidthrone and are under the ownership of Matron Alauraeva Voidthrone.

History & Usage

Discovery

The material was first discovered by mining squad working to the House Voidthrone together with freshly hired dwarven specialists from Stone Halls. The miners hit the cavern and found the cluster in it. They also found several torn-apart bodies of dead bats.

Mining tasks in the mine have been halted for now. The halt will continue until further investigations have been conducted about the dangers of the material.

Hazards

Soundwaves sent by the crystal clusters are potentially deadly. As such, great care needs to be taken when dealing with the material.

Distribution

Law & Regulation

As the material is a fresh discovery, it is currently under great scrutiny before it can be put in any usage. Investigations have been further complicated by the attempted theft of the research papers of Tarlyn Voidthrone who has been investigating the material. As well as murder attempt of said Tarlyn Voidthrone during the same theft attempt, which House Voidthrone has attempted to keep silent from outsiders to save face.

According to the interrogations made by members of the house Voidthrone, the attempt was put by a professional assassin, with an order from an anonymous customer.
