Florian Lamont Character in Manifold Sky | World Anvil

Florian Lamont

Florian Lamont was a member of the infamous Lamont crime family that terrorized Silkenvault in the late 9990s. After recieving what would have been a death sentence for his actions during the family's numerous high-stakes heists at banks and military supply depots, the 'pinstripe punisher' jockey opted instead to allow himself to be pressed into service with the Grand Army of Voxelia as a combat engineer. Now, chosen to die in a much more spectacular fashion, Florian has proven himself to be a valuable asset for the GAV's operations in the Rostral theater.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Florian was the second son of Djessa and Federiko Lamont. Federiko was a former utility skeleton operator turned armed robber, using his knowledge of auto-armor modding to create 'pinstripe punishers' - black-market experimentals - for use in his robberies. Djessa was Federiko's getaway driver, deploying the heavily-clad man to assault a bank, warehouse, or depot from the back of an unmarked box van before coming back around once the goods were in tow. From their hideout, a service station on the outskirts of Silkenvault, the couple carried out a decade-long crime spree with the help of a small network of local fences and crooked officials, many of whom turned out to be relatives willing to stymie investigations in return for kickbacks from the sale of Federiko's hauls.   When little Florian and his brother, Karl, came of age, they too donned pinstripe punishers and helped their father by supressing secruity staff and performing whatever light demolition might be required to get into vaults. This expansion of the family business would prove the Lamont crime family's undoing in 9995 AR when a hydraulic leak in Karl's modified Paladin led investigators to the service station. The family was tipped off and attempted to escape, but a high-speed chase ensued. Cornered by Silkenvault police into a rail depot, the box van crashed into a rail car of steel girders and was ripped open like a can of sardines. Djessa and Federiko died on the scene, Karl succumbing to his injuries a week later. Florian was left in traction with over a dozen broken bones and a punctured lung, but ultimately survived because he was already suited up in the back of the van.   Once recovered enough to stand trial, Florian was charged with numerous counts of armed robbery, mayhem, and felony murder. The prosecutors were able to pin the robbery charges on Florian, but not the other charges. Whereas Karl was known to be violent, having at least two murders to his name, glorian could not be decisively proven to have ever fired his weapon during a robbery and was generally employed by the family as the 'voice of reason' to subdue hostages. Even so, Florian was convicted of the robberies and faced the death penalty for his participation in the incedents that had resulted in deaths and other grievous injuries - albeit at the hands of his relatives.

Employment

At sentencing, Florian expressed remorse for his family's actions and offered to provide his services to the Grand Army of Voxelia in lieu of execution. The GAV was suffering a lean recruiting year and saw some potential in the man as someone who had the right combination of useful mechanical skills and absolutely nothing to lose. Moreover, representatives of the Council of Liars following the case saw that sending Florian to die in the service of Voxelia was a way to get some use out of a notorious criminal while still providing a degree of justice for the Lamont crime family's victims. For these reasons, a deal was struck, and Florian was effectively exiled to the Rostral front of the War of Reunification.   In the GAV, Florian now serves with the 6th Combat Engineering Corps. He wears a suit of PM "Paladin" Main Battle Auto-Armor, nicknamed the 'Gilt Goose,' with a slightly brighter and more yellow camouflage pattern than his peers, making him stand out from the crowd in a way that invites unwelcome attention from the enemy at times. This serves the purpose of drawing the attention of sniper and artillery fire away from other members of the 6th while they do their work; while most of the 6th works in subterfuge, Florian and his squad punch into enemy positions with maximum force in the hopes of siezing the objective as quickly as possible. It is thus surprising that Florian has managed to survive four years of constant front-line fighting considering how much of a target he is.

Mental Trauma

After the crash that took the lives of the rest of his family, not to mention several years of difficult and dangerous work exposed at the head of a demolitions force, Florian has come to believe that he is 'cursed with good fortune.' No matter what he does, Florian has the uncanny ability to come back unharmed - or, at least, physically unharmed. Florian's tour of duty includes brief periods of shore leave, but no defined end date, as the war has dragged on for almost a century already and shows now sign of cooling off in the near future. He fights with the fervor of a man who knows that the span of his life is only as long as his squad keeps completing objectives, but also wonders if it would have been better to accept the possibilility of execution all those years ago if only to have been spared witnessing the horrors of war up close as a constant, unbroken stream.

Personality Characteristics

Virtues & Personality perks

For all of the flaws attendant to his upbringing, Florian is courageous, inventive, and capable of exercising great restraint. He is a reasonable person thrust into a series of progressively more terrible life circumstances beyond his own control, and people around him recognize that. At the same time, he is also a man of action and is capable of channeling his fear and anger into burning focus on the task at hand - an imporant quality to have in his line of work.

Social

Religious Views

Florian was raised in an environment that gave little credence to organized religion. Still, as time has gone on, he has gravitated towards the worship of Zevtwill, God of Verbal Irony. Florian chose Zevtwill out of all the Gods of Irony because the Great Gadfly represents a sort of rejection of the status quo and, therefore, a hope that one can rise above one's station in life.
