New Year's Resolutions 2023

The event to start 2023 off right!

The Articles That Inspired Me

War Dogs

Jester%'s entry into the Military Unit category was very well made. No, it was more than that; it was masterfully crafted. Their ability to utilize different headings and body sections in a way that made sense as you continued to read. I am not well versed in such matters myself, but Jester% has opened the door to learning what works best and what looks the best. I recognized that the idea of highly-trained hounds used for war (while not original) was exceptional, and I will be using this in future Dungeons & Dragons battles. I want to read more about their world for inspiration someday.

The Flow of Magic

I was blown away by this Supernatural Law entry. I loved that JoebiWanKenobi316 combined so many different ideas and concepts from other mediums, adding their own creations, and producing a law of magic that I had never even thought of. There are references to reality, Dungeons & Dragons, along with the author's concepts. It's just phenomenal to think about how this affects the world JoebiWanKenobi316's world. I hope that they continue to work on this world-building; I think it could really go somewhere.

Golemancy Calligraphy

What a fantastical idea! Using real-life mythology about creating and controlling a golem is already a great way to hook some readers. Adding the mythology that Help Mike has created on top of it all? Magnificent! I find it to be very similar to the Dragon Tattoos in the world of Eberron. I may use this in my own world-building, but I shall give the credit for the idea to Help Mike. I will not use this in vain!

Flower of Sorrow

I really enjoyed reading this article. It had such a wonderful flow between the paragraphs and concepts. The most intriguing part was how the "myth" relating to the flowers had an in-universe impact, which is something I've seen before, but it's rather rare to my knowledge. I also love the setup of the page itself. The images made sense to to be where they were placed and the paragraphs flowed like water. I'm very thankful to have seen this. It's giving me inspiration to use the ideas of the article to impact it's format.

Anori's Roost - The Seeping Darkness

Wow. Just... wow. This was such an impressive (and long) piece of writing for a settlement. Orthais' formatting of the article is so fitting and flows very well. I also really loved the amount of variety in the writing, how there are different sections explaining the history of Anori's Roost, the former inhabitants, it's fall to ruin from the darkness. This in-depth type of writing is what I'm accustomed to seeing, but this stands out by a long shot. I enjoyed the reading as a whole, and I think that's my main take away.

Feeding Halls for Eldritch Horror

I specifically chose this article by AmélieIS because it sounded so... weird? I don't that's exactly what I'd describe it as, but it's the only description that comes to mind. I thought to myself, "A feeding hall for an eldritch abomination? Alright, I'm hooked." My favorite part was the little journal entry at the end from a character in that universe. It made the writing feel more realistic. The descriptions of the building are vivid, solidifying the term "show, don't tell". I'm very sold in this universe and I hope that I've learned enough about a building article to make use of it myself.

Lexicon

I got quite the chuckle out of this article. It's not awful by any means; it's actually very unique to use certain pop culture references for things in their world. And they are very well executed, which makes it feel more relatable to the more modern work. I think I want to do something similar, though, I should tread carefully to not use that mechanic too much.

Cerebromite

I like this idea of an exclusively owned and exported material that's magical in nature. I don't know that I have any examples of a similar set of properties. It's also unique in it's uses and origin. The Conductor? What is it? It's these types of writings, which make you ask more questions and delve deeper into the lore. I loved the combination of fantasy and cosmic horror. I know it's becoming more and more used in media, however, this is an example of utilizing the best aspects to it's advantage. Maybe this new world I'm creating needs a little cosmic intervention.

Gatlekh Pen

I really enjoyed this item idea. A simple item, like a pen, that has such an enormous impact on this universe is so intriguing. It makes one think about how many other items similar to the Pen. And also how many are just held by random people across the realm. A good way to make such significant item seem so mundane. I like the idea the this flips the McGuffin trope.

Battle of the Dead Planets

This article was definitely different when compared to others I've read for this event. It's simple and to the point. I think that this can be good for a quick article, but it should be built on further. Nonetheless, I thought the Sci-Fi setting was intriguing and has potential to be a great piece of fiction.

My 2023 Goals

This year, I want to make worldbuilding a larger portion of my hobbies. I want to make at least a basic outline that I can use to play a Dungeons & Dragons campaign in the setting. I plan on making more thorough goals about writing and work on my Worldbuilder's Journal for the full 365 days of this year.

Special Thanks to:

  • My partner, who helps push me to write for fun and being my unofficial editor.
  • My D&D group members that inspired me to write a campaign again.
  • The whole WorldAnvil community which gave me hope that I can be an author.
  • My emotional support cat, who laid next to me as I wrote.
