The Official Cult

The gods have ruled the race of men since time immemorial, and many peoples have come and gone from the earth, venerating and honoring them. Rome was born in a small land, under the protection of local deities. With the passing of centuries, it expanded over lands so vast that it leraned to respect all gods and from each it learned something. That's the reason why today in the Roman pantheon there aren't only Roman deities, but also gods from stranger lands whose cults consolidated into our religion over many centuries.

Main Gods

These are the gods on which the Pax Deorum is founded. The Pax Deorum is the sacred alliance that Rome forged with the celestial powers at the dawn of time, by virtue of which it could conquer and maintain such a large Empire. These are sacred entities that symbolize all of the characteristics that the Roman people feel are its own, or that they aspire to attain. They're equally divided into feminine and masculine entities, because Rome knows well that the weight of a great power can be sustained only by perfectly balanced forces. In spite of being all greatly honored, some of the gods have a privileged position among the others. , Juno, and Minerva form the so-called "Capitoline Triad," which means that they represent the fundamental values of our culture: Jupiter is the political power, Juno the family, and Minerva the civilization. In every one of the cities conquered by Rome, the most important temple, the Capitolium, is dedicated to these three gods.

Di Indigetes

The history of Rome began in a mythical and distant age, shrouded in the mists of a magical atmosphere. In this ancient world, enclosed within the borders of the ancient Latium and a wild Italia, there were religious and magical entities of obscure power, countless primordial deities that regulated each aspect of terrestrial life.
The ancient people of Rome knew and worshipped all of these gods, which today are gathered under the collective name of Di Indigetes. We still remember the names of only a few of them, but they are not secondary deities. Quite the contrary, it's on these powers that the ancient force of Rome was founded.

High Priests

There are many priests who take care of harmonizing the human activities and divine provisions, as the necessity of maintaining the Pax Deorum has always been deeply felt in the Empire. In each yaer there are many days that are marked by religious rituals or festivals, and sacrifices are offered almost every day.
Our religious system admits into its ranks both men and women. Many priesthoods are open to both sexes, while some are exclusive. Some priestly positions must be entrusted to a married couple, because they require balance between the masculine and feminine powers.
All priests are characterized by exterior elements that mark the high position they have in our society:
  • Toga praetexta If their order doesn't require specific clothing, the priests wear the same toga as the sneators, adorned with purple stripes. Women wear the stola, the matrons' tunic, decorated with purple hems and and equally hemmed cape.
  • Lictores They have the right to be escorted by lictors, like the consuls.
  • Sella curulis They sit on a special curved chair, embellished with ivory decorations, like the magistrates.
The most important colleges of priests reside inside the city of Rome, center of the political, religious, and magical power of the Empire. Not all of them are native to Rome, since these appointments are of such importance for the Empire's balance that they are chosen from all provinces, but most of the time they still have to live in the capital. Some of them can't ever leave it, while others must travel to fulfill their magical-religious responsibilities. In each provincal capital, there is some kind of religious "reflection" of Rome, and therefore there are diviner priests whose activities and functions mirror those of the highest priests of Rome. They are official priests, who act on behalf of the Empire, and are very respected personalities inside their communities.

Judging by the history of several of the Main Gods, it is reasonable to assume that they were also Di Indigetes before being elevated to their current status upon association with the Olympian gods that came from the Greek world.
