Empire of Jirithkae
In Jirithkae, you rise as high as your silver will take you. Bet someone could buy their way into the High Sovereignty if they were rich enough. Honestly, I'm surprised Hrithik-Kalyan hasn't tried that yet.
The Jirithkaen Empire prides itself on its liberties and prosperity. It has no oppressive caste system or state mandated religious doctrine like some of its neighboring nations. Although its risks are acknowledged, abyssal magic is openly celebrated instead of feared. People from cultures all across the world live together within the empire's borders. Citizens are free to live as they choose and pursue any career, education, or opportunity they desire.
If they have the silver that is.
Structure
Jirithkae is a constitutional monarchy led by the hereditary High Sovereign. They sit at the head of the Imperial Senate, a chamber of 60 senators who vote on national laws. The High Sovereign holds great influence in the government, but it is the Senate that ultimately controls the treasury, military, and legal system.
The empire is split into four provinces: West Jirithkae, East Jirithkae, South Jirithkae, and New Jirithkae. Each one is structured like a smaller version of the imperial government, with a Sovereign at the head of a provincial senate.
A Sovereign holds a large amount of executive power in their province, although they can still be outvoted by the provincial senate. Unlike the High Sovereign, they do not inherit their position and are instead democratically elected every ten years.
Although they are often allowed to govern their province as they see fit, a Sovereign must comply with any rulings made by the Imperial Senate and the High Sovereign.
Titles in the Empire
Titles are valued in the empire, especially to the polite and formal Jirians. Having a distinguished title usually doesn't give the bearer any special legal benefits, but it does earn them the respect of others.
Senator is a title for a member of either a provincial or imperial senate.
Governor is a title for a governmental authority who manages a single city or county.
Lord is a generic hereditary title for anyone from a noble family. Lords often control massive amounts of hereditary wealth and estates, but they no longer hold any governmental privileges. More than a few nobles have fallen into poverty, but they can still claim the title because of their family.
Knight is given to those who have made significant accomplishments for the nation. It was once reserved for the loyal warriors of nobles, but it can now be earned by people in any profession. In many cases knights are more highly respected than lords.
Doctor is given to those who have graduated from an accredited scientific or medical academy.
Sorcerer is given to those who have graduated from an accredited magical academy.
The Sanguine Dance
The Sanguine Dance is the name given to the shifting alliances of Jirithkaen politics.
For many years, the Sanguine Dance was the game of the aristocracy. Noble Houses across the empire would make alliances and conspire against one another to gain power and favor from the High Sovereign. It was a game played with feigned compliments, decadent masks, hushed whispers, and hidden blades.
As the balance of society shifted however, a new set of players entered the dance. Business magnates, scientists, and sorcerers stepped off of the sidelines and began to use their growing wealth and influence to manipulate the political landscape. No longer could the nobility rely on their titles alone for their place in the dance.
The Sanguine Dance continues, although it has moved from royal palaces to the back rooms of the senate. Some will use whatever means are necessary to secure victory, but always behind veiled threats and closed doors.
Culture
Jirithkae is filled with a colorful and chaotic blend of cultures from across the world. People from just about everywhere in Leitoria trade, work, and live along side each other.
Despite its claims to be a beacon of freedom and equality, Jirithkae is plagued by massive wealth and class inequality. Money is everything in Jirithkae. With enough silver, you can find a way to get anywhere you want to go. This is a fact well known by many in power, and political corruption runs rampant in both local and national governments.
Because of the widespread corruption, many citizens do not entirely trust their government. Some even look to other organizations for financial and legal security. There are a number of influential factions operating in Jirithkae that often possess a great deal of financial, and therefore political, power.
History
The empire was founded by Prince Somlek-Adul of the Othkaen Federation and Sovereign Yuvraj Motwani of the Jiri Sovereignty. The two nations had been at war on and off for centuries, but the marriage of the two rulers united them under one flag. For several centuries, the two provinces of East Jirithkae and West Jirithkae were jointly ruled by two hereditary sovereigns.
The empire was later conquered and ruled by the Old Thurnetorrian empire during the Imperial Age. After the Jirithkaens eventually reclaimed their empire, the position of High Sovereign was established to govern the entire empire with the help of the Sovereigns of East and West Jirithkae.
Later, the empire conquered the northern nation of Rhenace and added it as the third province. The territory was renamed North Jirithkae and a third Sovereign was added to the government.
The fourth province of New Jirithkae was officially established in 1872. This province included all Jirithkaen cities along the coast of Anithtoria.
Foreign Relations
The empire is deeply entrenched in the South Draconic War with Freyisdel. Both nations claim territory in Anithtoria, and their decades-long feud over land and resources has finally boiled over into outright war.
The two nations don't share a common border in Pelatoria, so most of the battles have been fought at sea or across the ocean on the southern continent.
On their western border, Marrith has become more aggressively expansionist. The Queendom has already secured border territory from the neighboring nation of Thurnetorre, and it is beginning to push eastward over the Great Pelian Mountains and into West Jirithkae. Neither side has formally declared war yet, but tensions are rising quickly.
However, few in the empire are eager to begin another war. Many fear that attempting to fight the Marrithians and the Frey on two fronts will end up tearing Jirithkae apart. Others worry that the empire's own internal corruption will do that anyway.
