Kamesh

Kamesh is a city of contrasts, filled with wonder, atrocity, beauty, sickness, hope, and despair. It is a marvelous display of technological achievement built on the skeleton of a dead titan. The glistening towers of glass and steel sit atop the twin hills and overlook the wretched slums of the valley between.
— Eesha Bedi, Jirian author

Kamesh is the capital of East Jirithkae and the largest city in the Jirithkaen empire. It is a bustling metropolis that is home to people from across the empire.

The Twin Hills

The city is built on and around two hills. Although it can be difficult to spot now that they have been covered in buildings and torian-made constructions, the twin hills are actually the collapsed stone body of an ancient titan that was split in two during a long forgotten war.

Titansfoot Hill is made up of what remains of the legs, and the bent right knee of the massive titan is now the highest point in the city. The Titansheart Hill is made up of the chest and shoulders. The crushed helmeted head is still visible nearby, half buried in the ground. Various other pieces of the ancient statue-like being are scattered across the surrounding landscape.

The Eleven Districts

Kamesh is divided into eleven districts that form rings around the city's twin hills. Odd numbered districts are located on Titansfoot Hill while even numbered districts are built on the neighboring Titansheart Hill.

The First District is at the peak of Titansfoot, the highest point in the city, and is the location of the Senate Hall, the sovereign's palace, and the city governor's home. It is strictly reserved for government buildings, and it is only accessible to government workers or those with a special pass.

The Second District is at the peak of Titansheart and is the home of the extremely wealthy. Homes here are magnificently beautiful mansions that are sheltered by high walls from the dust and clamor of lower districts.

The Third and Fourth Districts are the locations of corporate headquarters, expensive shops and restaurants, and the homes of the wealthy middle class. Although these two are built on slightly lower ground than the first two districts, the steel skyscrapers that fill these two districts tower above the sheltered mansions of the wealthy.

The Fifth and Sixth Districts are the homes of the middle class. Although they aren't as spotless as the higher districts, these two are still relatively clean and well maintained.

The Seventh and Eighth Districts hold factories, refineries, and apartments for working class people. Kamesh's extensive pipe networks transport water, fuel, and sewage to and from all districts, but the infrastructure tends to be more unreliable in this level of the city.

The Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Districts surrounding the bases of the twin hills are filled with of dingy factories and crowded slums that have been haphazardly cobbled together with whatever people can find.

There is no Ninth District, as nine is considered an unlucky number.

Government

Kamesh is the seat of the provincial government. It holds the East Jirithkaen Senate building as well as the palace of Sovereign Anik Dhar. The Sovereign and provincial senate are responsible for all of East Jirithkae, but their influence is felt most strongly in their home city.

Daily management of city affairs officially falls under the authority of the Governor Talwar.

Infrastructure

Trolleys transport people across the city, and the extensive tracks stretch through all eleven districts. The trolleys are the most common form of transportation through Kamesh, as the streets are often too narrow and crowded for any other vehicle.

Two large trolley bridges reach across the two hills and connect the Third and Fourth Districts as well as the lower Fifth and Sixth Districts.

The First and Second Districts are connected by sky carriage lines. The wealthy can travel between the hilltops in style within the windowed carriages suspended on cables above the lower districts.

History

Kamesh began as two separate villages built on the twin hills. As both grew in population, the two were expanded until they eventually merged into a single sprawling city.

The city was named after an old Jirian god of time, the moon, and magic. The deity Kamesh was often depicted as a sea turtle that carried the moon on its back.
