Warren III
Baron Warren (a.k.a. The Steward)
The Legend of the Steward
Warren the Steward is a heroic myth of the Snow Rocks, as well as the Augury. Particularly popular amongst the Snow Rock Isles and Shellbay, anyone may try to claim a connection to his lineage for political influence. For example, the Avblod Party of Shellbay has based the entirety of their philosophy on the importance of keeping a descendants of the Steward on the throne.
The Steward is an inspiring figure due to his underdog status. Few can hope to learn of warfare from the very people they hope to overthrow. Still, Warren III managed to overthrow his powerful opponent and unite the Isles in the first civil society humanity had ever recorded. His prowess in warfare combined with the epic tales of stormy battles during earthquakes made him the perfect hero for parents to inspire their children. In the years down the line, not even his favorite son, Kanel Logratte, could hold a torch to the myth of his father.
Life
Childhood
Little is known about the Steward's childhood, but plenty of theories have been proposed. We know that his father was spiteful and sickly: traits his bloodline grew to despise.
Most of Warren's early years would have been spent at Steirvem, laboring as a fisherman or craftsman. Little information could survive travels over large distances at the time, leaving his life fairly uneventful, even as a baron's son/grandson. There are no mentions of Warren III in documents surviving the Snow Rock Civil War , indicating that he was fairly young at the time and unable to make a name for himself.
In his late childhood, he would be taken as a steward and prisoner under Abbot I, where he managed to gain the skills to overthrow the imposter baron.
Stewardship
From late childhood until his early adult years, Warren III served as a steward under Abbot I. The position was intended to insult Warren II by taking his only son and heir to the Chummer's haseti. Initially, Warren III was put to hard labor, scrubbing and repairing ships or training any manner of mongrel pets the haseti began utilizing.
During his stewardship, the lack of allegiance for his failure of a father became clear to the haseti. Abbot I began to trust Warren III with time, eventually repositioning him as a scribe and personal assistant. For years, Warren III learned about haseti battle tactics, travel routes, culture, and general procedures. These would assist him in providing the Sveit Logr with the knowledge and skills required to overthrow the didactic baron.
Thanks to Abbot instilling the young steward with a respectful and diplomatic approach to discourse, the boy was able to quickly gain respect amongst the Sveit Logr when he abandoned the haseti to pursue a mutiny.
Rulership
After defeating Abbot I in a legendary battle, Warren III would take a diplomatic approach to ruling the Isles. Financial protection, trade routes, and a resourceful community were promised to all those who pledged allegiance to the Steward. Most of the major families accepted, and three of them would bind their lineages in marriage to the new baron.
Much of the Steward's policies were geared toward growing villages into towns, towns into cities, developing cultural centers, and providing the largest families with positions of power and respect. Not only did this improve the quality of life for civilians, but it also allowed him to surround himself with powerful family organizations that he had allowed to develop in the first place.
As he slowly improved the quality of living for the Snow Rocks, the haseti grew in both membership and resources. By the end of his reign, the haseti had become a small fleet of galleys, capable of intimidating any that questioned his rule (which was rarely necessary, as legends state the Steward to be popular among most of the islands' population).
Blood of Warren
The "Blood of Warren" is often referred to throughout the baronies. As the name implies, any who can claim relation to the Steward possesses his blood. The significance of this has several layers, as he was a notable ruler who preferred passing titles into direct familial descendants, but also claimed his title by divine right. Supposedly blessed by the Snow Rock gods during his final battle in The Steward's War, his blood was ordained with blessings of leadership, justice, and power. While the concept is generally outdated when it comes to deciding rulers, the claim still commands respect from contemporaries. Beyond simple social benefits, many believe that those with the Blood of Warren are uniquely inclined toward the path of paladins.
Some organizations still believe that Blood of Warren is the best basis for leadership, such as the Avblod Party in Shellbay, which has been gaining notoriety as of late (ca. 1947 NG). Groups such as the Avblods tend to believe that the Blood of Warren represents more than mere hereditary leadership. Warren III had crafted an entirely new culture in the Isles which spread thanks to a military structure that he also built. Modern civilization for humanity would be impossible without his contributions to history, and keeping individuals of his bloodline on the throne may be a sufficient way to uphold that culture in a rapidly progressing society.
