Narfi Whitefinger
Baron Narfi Whitefinger (a.k.a. the Orderly)
Narfi Whitefinger was the bastard son of Jere Whitefinger and Warren the Steward. Since his mother was in service to the Steward's haseti, he would follow the same fate. Bastards were hardly of high concern in this time period, but it was considered unseemly of a ruler to have them. Ironically, this standard was set by Warren the Steward himself after trying to establish a stronger culture with his people. Wishing to avoid scrutiny, Warren III ignored Narfi and Jere after the child's birth, though the entire haseti was aware that Narfi was his son. Narfi and Jere were scarcely criticized for the situation, as formal marriage was only for the baron at this point. Rather, writings show that Jere was helped more when raising Narfi than other mothers within the organization with fully present fathers. Narfi came to be loved, yet pitied by the people around him.
Narfi had a strong personality, though several people marked him as odd (assumed to be a result of 'confused blood'). He engaged in strange, harmless behaviors before his rule but no one paid it any mind. Eventually, the haseti crowned Narfi as the best choice of succession after the chosen heir's death. While his ascension was based on blood relation, personality, and aptitude, it also served to keep any of the greedy widows' families from gaining power. The widows' families had no power over the succession but chose not to fight against it for years, allowing Narfi to live a longer life than he otherwise may. Perhaps an early death would serve the nation better though, because his choices were widely considered bizarre.
His first decree was that members of a haseti could only reproduce with their fellow members. This may have been to reduce instances of bastards going without mothers or fathers. This itself could be seen as oddly noble, but he took it further. His second decree was that when a member of the haseti was attempting to have a child, a scribe of Bailum must be present to document the event. Alongside the reproduction rules, he instated marriage as an institution for all of the Sveit Logr, rather than just the baron. It was to be an unbreakable bond, even after the death of one of the two partners.
Mental characteristics
Education
Narfi was not formally educated as his father was (as best as you could be at this time). While he did not get to learn directly from a baron, he got to serve under one. He also got a large collective on knowledge and skills from the men of the haseti which gave him extra attention.
Failures & Embarrassments
Being a bastard was never held against him, but the pity itself bothered him.
Intellectual Characteristics
He was marginally intelligent, but hardly a genius. He was obsessed with patterns and following proper rituals without flaw. The few surviving records that record his personal life all note him as orderly to the point of "flaw" or "obsession."
Taboos
Many of the laws he brought into place were considered taboo. Especially having a scribe watch the act of conception. Street plays in the modern age depict Narfi as a twisted, strange, perverted voyeur who only made these changes to supply his sick satisfactions. Whether or not this is true is unknown.
