The Fish Egg Flu ravages Haseti

Disaster / Destruction

The near-total elimination of Narfi's Haseti due to a rapidly spreading disease.

Over the course of a few months, almost 35% of Whitefinger's haseti died from the spread of an illness. named the "Fish Egg Flu" for the black or red clumps that formed at the meeting of the neck and chin, it was able to spread rapidly in the dark, humid, close-quarter conditions of Narfi's ships. Most died due to the treatment for the disease, though. Priests or scribes would dig the clumps out with knives and cauterize the hole. Given the widespread and deadly track record of a couple of months prior, this treatment was utilized as soon as it showed to work.   Unfortunately, after the symptoms lessened for weeks, those who received the treatment would find themselves dying from the weakest of colds. Since several different groups of ships discovered this method at the same time, the treatment may have been sabotaged by the Logratte-Helgaard alliance.   During the spread of the disease, people came to question Narfi even further. He blamed the spread of the disease on "unlawful fornication" within the haseti, claimed to discover several gods on spiritual journeys (conveniently in response to the Alliance discovering new gods), burned haseti ships of those caught by illness, and began ignoring his own Moral Charter at every turn, abusing clause 9 and 11 repeatedly. Lastly, he stopped sailing with his crew. This would be standard during a defense, but the only threat was disease (unknowingly spreading from person to person, given the lackluster medical knowledge at the time). Lastly, he did not retreat to Steirvem (the land-based capital of his haseti). Rather, he moved to Jurejun, which would seem cowardly with the island's obscure reputation.
