Kiera was rescued by Ivan Thurisaz before the Valkran civil war when the group overtook a ship and released all of the slaves that were on it. Ivan discovered that Kiera was a body servant, as a slave, which horrified him. He then offered her a job as his valet, not realising how young she really was. After some time he understood her youth and formally adopted her so that she would have his legal protection. At the time he was an emissary/diplomat for Queen Althea, even though she was fighting a war.
During the war Kiera was left alone at the queen's castle and spent most of her time in the library. She learned directly from the archivist and discovered a personal love for the law - it fascinated her. She is now studying to become a lawyer.
Kiera's background makes her somewhat wary of men. However, there is a young man she likes and trusts enough to hang out with him. Part of this is that the fellow is quite nerdy, very gentlemanly, and has been too shy to do more than truly talk to her as a friend.
