Semolina Hedgehopper Character in Kriadar | World Anvil

Semolina Hedgehopper (Not Cinnamon)

Semolina is a Halfling who was traveling through Gharob on a riverboat when the earthquake struck. Before Gharob, Semolina had traveled overseas in the same ship as Bixi, the two of them working somewhat together as the ship’s cook in order to pay their way. The two have formed quite the rivalry during their time together, even though they continue to end up traveling in the same direction. Semolina has joined the party of survivors as they attempt to escape from the Mushroom Seam.

Personality

Semolina is a Monak extremist, obsessed with the supremacy of the Halfling people. She refuses to call the Guardians by their Congregation names.

She is adventurous, having traveled the world to see other Halfling cultures.Semolina is a brash person, she says what she’s thinking, regardless of the consequences. She’s very full of herself, believing that she could be a great hero, but in fact she generally prefers a quiet life.
The whipping post of the group, Semolina is anxious, but stubborn and willing to put herself in danger just to prove that halflings are the best. After the initial accusations against her, she’s not particularly trusting of most of the survivors, who she has called racist. At some point during their time in the Mushroom Seam, Kaziel began calling her “Cinnamon” a name that everyone seems to call her by now.

Chronicles

History

Semolina’s parents are proud Monak halflings who particularly enjoy the life of luxury they have in Monakat living off the wealth and taxes they’ve received in the form of reparations and her father’s earnings from the tavern he runs.

Semolina loved working in the inn with her father, particularly cooking and serving traditional halfling meals. However, she hated the reparations system, and how it caused certain halflings to be lazy and rely too heavily on the humans.

Wanting to see how halflings live elsewhere, Semolina traveled Monakat working in various inns to make her way. During this period, she was caught in an attack against a halfling village by a group of angered humans. The inn she was working in was burned down, Semolina’s leg still has the burns from it, and several halflings were killed. The local lord retaliated, hanging a few of the attackers, but Semolina did not find justice in this. The problem wasn’t the humans, it was the tax system.

She then decided to leave Sh’hoona, to really see what halflings live like outside. She heard of the Joylands, and set out to see these lands. The Joylands were both a disappointment and inspiration. There, in Letzel, a unique halfling culture thrived free from the resentment and violence of the Mazrites. However, the halflings in this land claimed to be independent, pretending that their independence made them superior. Yet, she saw through this veil, the Joylands were only free because the humans allowed them to be so, putting them on display for others to see so that they can claim nobility.

Fed up with the Joylands, disappointed in her own people, Semolina began the journey to return to Monakat, where she dreamed that maybe she could inspire some change among her own people.

The Mushroom Seam

Semolina landed not far from her rival Bixi, right in the center of a squishy mushroom. Stuck on her back, thrashing about, Semolina began to panic, but Bixi came over and pulled her out. The two of them then got into a small competition trying to heal the corpses near them while arguing over who caused the quake and Seam. Nadir al-Karak and Darcassian Gwailimar Sarhana, hearing the argument joined in, and soon joined Bixi’s side, accusing Semolina of causing the catastrophe. Semolina, back to a mushroom, pointed to them all, calling them racists. It was only when Davaa Lanthir came running by and informed them that they had fallen into a Seam that people left Semolina alone, though there was still some tension between her and the others. During the fight against the horrors, Semolina ran and hid from the monsters, later rejoining the group as they discussed their plans and joining them as they began the search for an exit. When the forward party returned from scouting out the source of the sound, the group began discussing alternative routes. Semolina claimed that the group could not continue to go back and forth, and they had to keep moving forward. Bixi called her out, daring her to go on her own, and Semolina, wanting to prove halflings are brave, hesitantly agreed to do so. To her relief, Ataidas volunteered to go with her, followed by Evsalom, Kaziel, Davaa and even Bixi.
