Underground - The third city

The City of Gold

They really did it! They levelled half a nation in an attempt to bust us open. Founded New Etherium right above our base of operation. And yet have not a singular clue that we are even here. Are we even the 'bad guys' anymore? Etherium commits war crimes in their utter helplessness. Millions have died under the Crimson Sun and these divine robots claim the spoils and order to dig out the Underground. Now that's a joke if I ever heard one, but one without a punchline. Just more who have joined our cause far below the surface, abandoning these oh-so-holy Eternals. Hilarious.

A letter to the Showrunner (4988)

The Underground - A name that causes even the gods to groan in timeless frustration. Founded in the year 3688 AS the breeding pool of evil was and still is a major thorn in the side of the surface. A place where the illegal market can prosper. Slavery, the selling of unregistered weaponry, unregulated hitmen and illegal substances. The Underground supports it all and has even built and maintained a functioning society around the lawlessness far below the all-seeing eye of the omnipotent god Terminus for many centuries.

The third city

In the year 4243 AS expanded the Underground for the second time its influence over the globe. One of their arcane 'probes' discovered a massive cavern 3 kilometres below the surface of East-Nemthi. A discovery that would go into the history books of the Underground as a milestone in their quest for a presence all around the globe. The third city, nameless as they all are, focused on using the rich soil of Nemthi to fund the operation for centuries to come. Turning the growing city into a paradise for slavers to put their belongings to work. The third city became known as the city of gold and riches, the treasure chamber of the Underground.
"Slavers tend to settle down in the second city, but the big fishes, oh they lay claim in the third city.
Let their slaves build them a penthouse near an underground river and then let them mine to further their wealth.
If you want to have influence in the Underground, get the third city on your side."

The boss of the underground, The Showrunner

An unique hierarchy

A society built on the foundation of cheap and forcefully obedient labour without any threat of change is prone to revolutionize its very system eventually. While there were and still are traditional slaves of many kinds in the private possession of the filthiest filth of Prius enjoy workslaves, especially servants of multiple generations, an existence that one could cautiously even describe as living. For those who don't work in the mines for their master but much rather do their busywork in the cities, taking care of the business in the markets, for those is life all things considered not too bad. They get respected based on their brand and treated like an emissary of their master. And some of these even eventually inherit the place of the top dog taking over the business and enjoying their power to continue the circle.

Being a slave in the Underground is a game of seeking out opportunities to earn the 'R' every slave of this cut-off city desires to add to their title. By the time when the Showrunner took over in 4985 was the slave and ex-slave population at an all-time peak. Nearly 70% of all active Slavers had roots at the very bottom of the food chain.

An old saying in the Underground says the following:
'A slave brand is only for as long a sign of being suppressed until you take that sign and become its master branding slaves yourself. Each sign tells a story of centuries having gone through countless families and businesses.'

The Net

All four cities of the Underground are connected with each other assuring a presence of crime across the globe that keeps the keepers of Law on their toes. Having ties to the Underground is a blessing for every criminal to submerge after a successful heist. The four cities are connected with each other through massive portals allowing for near-instantaneous travel. Portals that are meant to be held open permanently. But due to the nature of how Portalmages are limited in their power the underground resides to 'mortal batteries' to power the portals.

Mortal Batteries (Gruesome)

Behind the term Mortal Battery hides away maybe the biggest crime of my people. Even in my status as Godking am I unable to rescue these poor souls or the entire Underground would want to chop off my head. Portalmages can create portals via creating forms with their limbs or fingers. To assure that our portals remain open our forefathers developed the 'battery cage'. A disrespectful state you don't even wish your worst enemy to endure. To prevent the closure of the portal live these lowest of slaves in a perpetual state of immobilisation, unable to even wiggle a finger. Kept barely alive for as long as necessary without ever being able to form a new portal.

The city

The third city is far less populated than the other three. Claims to the riches of the treasury got made many centuries ago and get handed from one family member to the next and to the favourite slave if they were the last. The permanent population of this golddigger city consists of nearly 100% of slaves and slavers with slave ancestry.
"The Leregros Family is the last remaining family, which had originally signed the treaty all these centuries ago.
They think they are better just because they had an heir to continue the claim."

A literal criminal underworld. Love it! And social advancement by the slave eventually inheriting the family business is great. How many of these successions have been arranged by the former slaves?

As mentioned have all but one of the original investors found their ownership in the hands of former slaves. This family business went downhill then quite quickly with the former slave having not much family to inherit it to. Having instead favourites in their ownerships they train to keep the boat floating and the ancient contract true. Magical brandings make sure of that that the integrity of business stays true,
