Long War

What do you get when you put warriors of light against tyrants of darkness, and the massive states behind both. THis conflict answers that with "An Ocean of Blood and a 4000 Year Long War".

The Conflict

Prelude

The prelude to the Long War was the expansion of both Achronis and Laran by colonizing, incorporating, or subjugating the smaller states which lay between them. They had both heard of one another through the legends and stories of their new territories, but meeting was still a shock.

Most of the details are fairly murky, as this is an old war, but what is known is that it is primarily a conflict between Nameless and Lati, with their respective states as the intermediaries. Most suspect a feud between a Nameless and a Lati led to bloodshed, which spilled out into the Long War as its known today.

Battlefield

There is no corner of the known universe that hasn't been at the very least grazed by the war, as Warbands and LEgions scour every bit of space to find fronts to open against their enemies. That said, the main battlefields are the Borderfront and No Man's Land.

The former is where Achroni and Larani borders meet, directly meet. Anywhere they remain even somewhat constant is built up with Star-Citadels, fortress worlds, and armies beyond count. The latter is an area of space that has been fought over for so long that all life in the area has been confined to the occasional small state or a space station, largely due to Laran's many, many, many superweapons.

Conditions

Whatever the conditions were at the start, the only thing each state will tolerate now is the complete and total annihilation fo the other.

Historical Significance

For a relatively accurate and unbiased look at the Long War, the attached timeline grants a play-by-play of the war's broad strokes. The more in-depth and important campaigns/crusades have their own timelines laid out.

Legacy

The Legacy of the still-ongoing conflict has spawned several schools of scholarship, with entire academies devotes to researching one particular front or aspect of the war. What is for certain is that unimaginable bloodshed has occurred as a result fo this war, with entire species snuffed out of existence.

In Literature

Countless stories have been told to recount and remember the war, from biographies, research papers, fiction stories, and more. The Long War is the single most influential event in either Laran or Achronis' history, and their literary works show.

Strength

Achronis has a very clear technological advantage in their navy and in their supply chains. They are also slightly larger, so if it ever came down to just numbers, then they would win.
While Achronis has more manpower, Laran's mandatory military service and preinstalled nationalism provide them with many more soldiers, most of whom are willing to put up with their generals "We Have Reserves" tactics if it means sacrificing themselves for the glory fo their Lati. Their infantry and artillery is also much more powerful, and they are completely willing to use brutality tactics to seize victory.

Casualties

They have lost, as of 449 PKR, roughly 500 Billion soldiers, and countless more financially. They have lost many more civilians, roughly 800 Billion, due to Laran's usage of brutality tactics and complete willingness to attack civilian targets.
They have lost, as of 449 PKR, roughly 900 Billion soldiers, due to the most popular tactic among Laran's generals and Lati being "We Have Reserves". They have lost maybe 200 Billion Civilians to the minority of Achroni leaders who are willing to attack civilian targets and use indiscriminate bombardment methods. Special note goes to , who explicitly called for strategies such as these to be incorporated into the central Achroni strategy.

Objectives

To annihilate Laran and the Lati.
To annihilate Achronis and the Nameless.

    Defector Crisis
    Political event

Over the course of the near-century, roughly 70 worlds defected from one side to another. There were a myriad of reasons, from ideology to who they thought would win, but the main reason was that a world was far too separated from its central government to get any support in case the other attacked, so defected to gain more security. Towards the end of the period, both states had managed to coerce most of the planets on the fence about whether or not to defect to stay, through a series of bribes, assurances, and threats that they would attack first.

As with the previous phase of the war, Achronis is nowhere near defeat, dealing more than their fair share of damage. However, with Laran's consistent push into Achroni territory, even expanding their borders past what they were in the TWP phase, it can be certain who is on the back foot.

It involved several Warlords banding together, and punching a hole through the Larani frontline, fighting their way through to the area in question, carving out an exclave from which to raid the slavers. The crusade lasted until the force was nearly completely eradicated, in which time the populations of the controlled planets and constructed bases were evacuated and harried back until they reach the borders of Achronis. It was a major display of Achorni military might, and that the Long War was far from over, especially since they spent the entire time under siege.

The branch was already notorious for the numerous amounts of storms and predators that plague its streamways, and it is these such elements, along with the obstinance of the Achroni defenders, that have hampered Larani advances for this long. Armageddon is synonymous with death sentence for any Lati or Lerin assigned there, as the turnover rate of generals, special forces, and even entire legions, is spectacularly large.
