Fishing practices and techniques

Diving and spear fishing

Diving for shellfish is common around the coasts of Helerin, and some fish are predominantly caught by spear fishing.

Line fishing

Line fishing is practised in rivers, lakes, and along the coast. Lines are used for fish and crabs.

Traps

Traps are used to catch lobsters.

On-shore nets

Trabucco are wooden scaffolds built on rocks jutting out into the sea. A large net is lowered into the water with the tide, and pulled up to catch passing fish.

Trawler nets

Sailing boats trawl nets off shore and out into deeper waters. Catches vary widely.

Fishing across Helerin

Seynan Islands

The Seynan Islands’ fishing industry is deeply tied to the seasonal rhythms of the sea. During Turning and Oathing, fishermen target squid and Melmakkir in the shallow and near-shore waters. As the year progresses to Windrise and Girysal, spear-fishing for Lorghee and Teydeh becomes prominent, especially in rocky coastal areas. The islands celebrate the bounty of Jashatt and Pargam during Fairsky, marking the height of the fishing season.   In the peak summer months of Hometides and Bladestill, the open seas become a haven for catching Reestlash and Bellim-Ban. However, Redtides brings a lull in fishing as the seas become less fertile, with many fishermen focusing on near-shore and on-shore catches. As the weather cools during Huntscall, the focus shifts back to pelagic species like Melmakkir and Jashatt. By Lan Kulal and Pressing, the islands see a return to squid fishing, while the deep-sea harvest of Oshpaddum and Brossa begins, providing a rich bounty as the year ends.   Fishing fleets operate from the following settlements:

Remon

In northern Remon, the fishing industry is diverse, with Passu, Teydeh, and octopus being the primary on-shore catches during the cooler months of Turning and Oathing. As the year progresses, the near-shore waters become rich with Shassfuni and shrimp, with open sea fishing focusing on Dolki and Jashatt during Windrise and Girysal. The southern coast sees a high yield of Bellim-Ban in the Straits of Jaltra during Bladestill, coinciding with the peak of the summer fishing season.   By Redtides, fishing slows, but Melmakkir and Reniri still provide a steady catch. As Huntscall approaches, the focus shifts back to pelagic species like Jashatt and Pargam. Lan Kulal and Pressing mark the end of the pelagic fishing season, with squid and deep-sea species like Oshpaddum becoming the primary focus as winter sets in during Frenal.   Fishing fleets operate from the following settlements:

Forbin

Forbin's Northern Marches are known for their rich fishing grounds, with Passu, Teydeh, and octopus being the main catches during Turning and Oathing. Windrise and Girysal bring an abundance of Shassfuni and shrimp, with open sea fishing targeting Reniri in the Sea of Fair Winds. The western coast, particularly near the Straits of Jaltra, sees a high yield of Bellim-Ban during Bladestill, a prized catch that marks the peak of the summer season.   On the southern coast, Dolki and Jashatt dominate the open sea catch during Fairsky and Hometides. As the year progresses to Lan Kulal and Pressing, the fishing focus shifts to deep-sea species like Oshpaddum and Brossa, with squid fishing taking precedence as the weather cools in Frenal.   Fishing fleets operate from the following settlements:

Mar Miskun

Mar Miskun's fishing industry is shaped by its diverse coastal and open sea environments. During Turning and Oathing, Passu and squid are the primary catches in shallow and near-shore waters. As the year progresses to Windrise and Girysal, the focus shifts to Shassfuni and Jashatt, particularly in the Sea of Fair Winds, where these species thrive.   Bladestill marks the peak of the summer fishing season, with Reestlash and Nechlin being the main targets in open and deep-sea expeditions. However, Redtides brings a decline in fishing productivity, with many fishermen turning to near-shore catches of Melmakkir and Pargam. As the cooler months of Huntscall and Lan Kulal arrive, the fishing industry sees a resurgence, focusing on pelagic species like Reniri and deep-sea fishing for Oshpaddum as the year draws to a close.   Fishing fleets operate from the following settlements:

Mar Mabon

The fishing industry in Mar Mabon is diverse, with Passu, crab, and lobster being the primary catches along the coasts during Turning and Oathing. Windrise and Girysal see a shift to near-shore fishing for Shassfuni and Dergam, particularly in the Mabon Channel, where these species are abundant. The northern coast is known for its high yields of Bellim-Ban and Nechlin during Bladestill, making it a key region for summer fishing.   As Redtides approaches, the focus shifts to open sea species like Pargam and Jashatt, with deep-sea expeditions targeting Oshpaddum and Kiddri as the cooler months of Huntscall and Lan Kulal arrive. The year ends with Pressing and Frenal, where the emphasis is on squid fishing and harvesting the last of the season's bounty from the deep seas.   Fishing fleets operate from the following settlements:

Teros

Teros’ fishing industry is highly productive, with Passu, Teydeh, and crab being the main catches in the early months of Turning and Oathing. As the year progresses to Windrise and Girysal, the focus shifts to near-shore species like Shassfuni and Dergam, particularly in the Mabon Channel and Sea of Fair Winds. The southern coast of Teros is known for its rich yields of Dolki and Nechlin during Bladestill, marking the peak of the summer fishing season.   As Redtides approaches, the industry adapts to the changing conditions, with Pargam and Jashatt becoming the primary targets in open sea fishing, while deep-sea expeditions focus on Oshpaddum and Kiddri. By Lan Kulal and Pressing, the fishing industry sees a shift towards squid and deep-sea species, with the year ending in Frenal with a focus on harvesting the last of the season's bounty before winter sets in.   Fishing fleets operate from the following settlements:
