The Palatinate
The Palatinate is located in the central part of the continent. It comprises of many different kingdoms, duchies, principalities, electorates, etc. This empire is an assortment of different lands, peoples, and cultures, that finds itself in a complicated state of existence. Organized in a sort of loose confederation, each realm within The Palatinate is a part of the empire itself, but can also act independently. There is an emperor or empress who rules over the lands within the empire itself, but they usually have little to no power. Even though the monarch sets the tone for everyone else to follow, each state has a tendency to go its own way. In order for the government to work, the emperor/empress must keep the monarchs throughout their realm content, but that is not always the case. The monarch of The Palatinate is chosen through an elective process by all the other rulers within the empire--making direct lines of succession quite difficult. Whenever it is time to vote and choose, many try to pick someone who lords over lands outside The Palatinate since they aren't completely in the empire's influence, and have the power and resources to support their rule. This (in theory) creates a much more stable reign.
Structure
- Emperor: Ruler and monarch of The Palatinate. Elected by kings, princes, dukes, and lords within the empire.
- Imperial Diet: Semi-legislative body made up of the empire's many rulers. In practice they can sometimes have more power than the emperor. Whoever serves in the diet has a good chance of becoming the next emperor. Those serving in the diet held equal power as those within the courts.
- Imperial Court: Judicial body made up of the empire's many rulers. Those serving in the court held equal power as those within the diet.
- Monarchs: Kings, princes, dukes, and lords who rule the many realms of The Palatinate. Their titles hold no weight over the other as the emperor (in theory) is above them all.
- Regional Lords: Nobles who govern certain regions within their respective realms.
- Minor Lords: Nobles who pay homage and are overseen by the regional lords.
Military
The army of The Palatinate is not like a traditional army in other kingdoms, or realms. After the death of the first emperor Volkmar I, there has never been a true standing army. The army of The Palatinate is mustered from the many different realms and kingdoms that coincide within it. As a result, these armies tend to be more loyal to their respective monarchs rather than the emperor. Although, the emperor does have a force of 10,000 soldiers that are recruited throughout the empire. They are known as the Imperial Guard. They are located near The Palatine and serve as bodyguards, law enforcement, and soldiers in times of war.
Religion
There is no state religion within The Palatinate, as the empire is comprised of many different faiths. Most of the Canonical Gods and their respective cults are present throughout the empire. There are several established religions worshipping the Old Ones as well. Worship of the Apostates is banned, causing most of those cults to be either heavily persecuted, or operating underground. The Church of the Holy Flame has gained in popularity over the years, and it is safe to say that it has become the most dominant religion within The Palatinate, but it is not the state religion. This is due to the monarchs of Ostral having been successive rulers of The Palatinate. The Church of the Holy Flame gained its first true foothold within the Kingdom of Ostral, and with its monarchs becoming emperors, the religion is spreading more and more.
