SC23 Prep: Theme 2 - Frontiers

This article is a part of the Summer Camp 2023 Prep series.

Where are the frontiers in your worldsetting? And why would anyone want to go there?! What about metaphorical frontiers, like the “frontier of medicine” or space, the “final frontier”?

The Caves of Kurzniert (Military/Exploration)

These jagged walls have not felt the gentle caress of our House's hammers for far too many years.
— A Dwarven Treasure Hunter
The Northernmost settlement of the Stormbreak Mountains, Kurzneirt was made infamous when the Kynekin seized the Dwarven stronghold at the battle of Kurzniert. Six decades later, the Dwarves' thirst for vengeance still runs deep.   Rumors abound that a new power drives the occupying force to expand the Kynekin foothold further South. History aside, there are many who say the caves and tunnels of the Northern Stormbreak have gone untended for too long, creating an opportune time for other, darker denizens of the deep, neither Myndikin nor Kynekin, to lay claim to the Dwarves ancestral home.

The Secrets of Stoverj (Arcane)

Shhh! Be quiet! Can't you see I'm on the verge on an incredible discovery!
— Am Aspiring Ja'nakh Wizard
The Library at Stoverj, the center of magical studies in the First Age from which ignited the flames of the Kynekin rebellion that would consume the land. The surrounding city now serves as the capital of Vath'azen.   For nearly a millennium, the arcane secrets of the Elves were considered solely the domain of the Myndikin races (though even then, access by non-Elves was tightly controlled). Now, the Kynekin have at their disposal a treasure trove of knowledge and push to not only embrace and dissect it, but also to push the very boundaries of known magic. Peoples from all across the land flock to Stoverj in pursuit of knowledge and learning long kept from the masses. But what other truths lie buried beneath the dust of antiquity in the dimly lit depths of the Library? Such things may be better left forgotten...

The Zuul'hy Freelands (Geopolitical)

It's going to be fine. No one will ever know. Trust me.
— A Friendly Merchant of Hard-to-Find Goods
The Thee'nor Accord declared a vast expanse of East-Central Gokrenxia to be a free zone, that is, an area in which neither the Kynekin armies of Vath'azen, nor the Myndikin forces of the Elves and Humans (and ostensibly the Dwarves, though they showed little interest in the open, rolling grasslands and forests) would maintain a military presence, nor attempt to establish a foothold. Over the years, this freedom has created an inclusive, independent, rough-edged, and hardy spirited people, as well as a haven for those seeking to avoid any unnecessary scrutiny over their unscrupulous activities. Zuul'hy is a wild and lawless amalgam of diverse communities dotting the landscape, built from the wreckage of Elven cities from the First Age.
