Siliceer
A siliceer is a glassworker who is trained to transform molten cindersand into godglass by adding the appropriate chemical and mineral impurities to create the different colors while applying heat and pressure to improve its resonance. The best siliceers can craft high-resonance godglass. All siliceers have burn scars on their arms from working in the furnaces, making them very recognizable craftsmen. They also need to take regular breaks during their crafting in order to avoid glassrot.
They learn their trade through a series of apprenticeships which can take years. Thessa Foleer explains this is why female siliceers often put off having children until their thirties. After climbing the ranks of junior apprentice and senior apprentice, they earn the title of Craftsman. Eventually, they may work their way up to the rank of silic master, earning the title of Master.
Their craft makes them invaluable assets. This leads to their imprisonment in labor camps during the war between Ossa and Grent and their strategic murder during the secret guild-family silic war. Siliceer convicts, hostages, debtors, and other enemies of the state also often serve in labor camps making godglass.
STORY
Master Kastora is a master-level siliceer with a reputation for brilliance and wisdom. One of his sayings states, "Scars are the true reflection of a siliceer. Too many and she is an oaf. Too few and she’s never truly worked the furnaces."
His student Thessa Foleer is a siliceer prodigy who is also sorcery-aphasiac, making her immune to both glassrot and godglass sorcery. When captured by Ossan scouts, she uses her siliceer scars to prove her worth, narrowly avoiding forced service in the Ossan Navy, getting imprisoned in the Ivory Forest Glassworks instead. Once there, she notices Filur Magna, who insists upon being called Craftsman Magna, has no siliceer scars, giving her an indication of his incompetence.
