Rabbit Settlement in Gamma World | World Anvil

Rabbit

Although it doesn't exactly look it, Rabbit is one of the most prosperous towns in the Taebur region. It is the second-largest city, second only to the City of Cartoons. It is also the only place with city-wide electricity distribution. Even the City of Cartoons doesn't have this everywhere (though, to be fair, the City of Cartoons is much larger, and the areas where it does have electricity are collectively larger than Rabbit). Several of Taebur's larger companies that don't want to be located in the City of Cartoons have their offices in Rabbit, including Discount Pharmaceuticals and Gunpowder Zone, one of the few notable competitors of Amul Firearms. There are also branches of companies based in the City of Cartoons.   Located on the banks of the White River at the eastern end of the Grand Canyon, Rabbit sits on some of the most fertile land in all of Taebur. Given the lack of fertility in most of Taebur, this isn't that particularly astounding, but it still gives the city an edge over most of the others. It is also one of the most accessible locations in the region, and the only place that is easily accessible to locations outside Taebur. The walls of the Grand Canyon are virtually gone here, and the White River is actually somewhat safe and navigable. This means that Rabbit sees a large number of travellers from the south and east, as well as people from other parts of Taebur who are headed out. This has given the town somewhat vibrant tourism and entertainment industries.

Demographics

Rabbit has one of the most diverse populations in Taebur, with a fairly even mix of stock humans and mutants, with a sizable number of synthetics. Despite its prosperity, however, a good third of the population live in poverty, in buildings that look on the verge of falling over. They may have electricity, but most don't have running water. Most of the remaining two thirds of the population are only marginally better off. The majority of Rabbit's prosperity goes straight to the corporate heads who run the town.

Government

Rabbit is ruled by a council made up of the senior executives of the largest corporations located in town. There is a mayor, but this is just a figurehead, put in place by the corporate council. Few mayors last more than a year and most only a few months, as they always end up falling out of favour with at least one of the companies that gave them the position and need to be replaced. Residents of the town are often unsure who their current mayor is, and if asked, are just as likely to give a name that was two or three mayors ago as they are to give the current mayor.   Many of the companies on the corporate council are in direct competition with each other, which can result in little getting done for the city as a whole. About the only thing they ever agree on is keeping the electricity running, and that's simply so they have something to brag about.

Infrastructure

As mentioned above, Rabbit has city-wide electricity distribution. This is supplied primarily by several generator plants along the White River, but is also supplemented with oil purchased from Qaa.   Rabbit is also notable for having the only safely functioning hospital outside of the City of Cartoons. Run by Discount Pharmaceuticals, it is not a large hospital (it contains only 250 beds total), but as the majority of people in Rabbit cannot afford its services, it doesn't need to be large. It caters to the rich of Rabbit and other towns in the White River Region.

History

Despite its name, there are no rabbits native to Rabbit. However, a common story claims it was founded by a Hoop named either Bugs or Roger (depending on the version of the tale). This is almost certainly not true, though no one is entirely sure where the story came from.   Other stories say that it is named after the ruined Old World city on the other side of the White River, with its name being a corruption of whatever that city's name was. This is much more likely, although it does leave the question of why it's named after the city across the river rather than the ancient city it's built on top of.   Whatever the case, the city has existed in some form since the beginning of the Gamma Age.

Benefits: Given its size, a community allegiance to Rabbit is less likely than allegiances to the individual corporations, businesses, or locations within it. In fact, given the competing interests of those companies, an allegiance to the community as a whole would be difficult; however, it could be an interesting challenge.
