Discount Pharmaceuticals
The largest developer and distributor of pharmaceutical products in Taebur, Discount Pharmaceuticals is also a leader in medical knowledge and research. The organization has a reputation for high-quality products that are usually dependable and effects, and they are constantly developing new drugs, as well as improved versions of their already-existing products. However, overall opinion about the company is mixed, since, despite what its name and slogan promise, its prices are generally not affordable to most people. The company insists these prices are the cheapest they can make them, "so cheap that we actually lose money making most of them." However, this isn't much comfort to the average person in Rabbit and elsewhere who cannot afford their services. It's also not lost on most peoplel that despite these "ultra-cheap" prices, Discount Pharmaceuticals is still one of the richest organizations in all of Taebur.
Unlike most other similarly rich companies, Discount Pharmaceuticals isn't based in the City of Cartoons and is instead based in Rabbit. It does have offices in the City of Cartoons, however.
Public Agenda
Discount Pharmaceuticals lays out its agenda clearly and openly: to offer the highest-quality pharmaceuticals possible for the lowest price possible, and (through the Oryctolagus Cuniculus Hospital--see sidebar) to provide the best possible healthcare at the most affordable prices. While there are many who doubt the truthfulness of this agenda, one thing can't be denied: the company's products are high-quality and effective. They might have minor side effects, but they generally do what they're supposed to do, and they achieve better results than their competitors.
They also run frequent drug trials that they invite the public to take part in. The products in these trials can be much less effective, but the company is always open that these are experimental, untested drugs. However, as these trials cost nothing to participate and actually pay the participants, they're often the only way less affluent people can hope to gain access to medical care, and so Discount Pharmaceuticals rarely has difficulty getting people to take part. It does add to people's distrust of the company's motives though.
History
Discount Pharmaceuticals began over a century ago as a group of disparate doctors and biologists who wanted to help people better live in and understand the dangers of the new Gamma Age. They decided to pool their resources to recover the secrets of Old World medicine and to research newer things like mutation.
At first, this was little more than an informal arrangement to help each other. Over time, however, as civilization was rebuilding around them and competition arose, it became necessary to make their agreement more formal. In 12 BF, the company was officially founded and given the name Discount Pharmaceuticals. In its new corporate state, its management consisted more and more of business people who were neither doctors nor scientists and who were focused more on profit than on helping others. However, helping others was never given up on; helping others simply became the means of making the profit. Many have argued that this approach is what has allowed it to survive, and that if it had continued along its original path, it would have collapsed without helping nearly as many people as it has gone on to help.
