The Sanctuary {facility}

We filed into the small room and the portal closed behind us, quickly replaced by a new portal as Trixie entered the second code. We then stepped through it, and I couldn't help but pause for a moment to admire the stunning vista in front of us and the entrance to the garden. I had to admit it was still quite breathtaking.

"Unbelievable," Prodigy whispered, taking in the scene.

"I know, right? It's incredible how they—"

"Would you fucking look at this place? Unparalleled access to the greatest technology the world has ever known, and they build a goddamn lawn. Those stupid hippies are probably growing hemp."

The Sanctuary is Demetria's main base of operations for the eponymous group. The massive complex seems to cover at least a city block or more, having a school, training facilities, and an extensive library. It also has a huge outdoor area which includes a large garden area that features many rare plants, including some taken from other worlds. The complex is open to all, apart from a small meditation area in the garden that Demetria reserves for her private use. It has a fountain there with a life-size statue of Starbrite, surrounded by rare and colorful Elysian Starblossom flowers.

Items and Equipment

  • Mental Reconditioning booster -
    Hidden beneath the sprawling Sanctuary, this complex
    device amplifies Demetria's powers and allowed her to take her
    mental conditioning city-wide, with the additional side effect of
    activating latent metahuman powers. Prodigious Girl was able to
    use the device to confront Demetria on the psychic plane.

Denizens

The facility was exclusively used by members of The Sanctuary, and the occasional guest.

In addition to Demetria, who lived there and seldom left, the grounds also had other full-time residents such as Enchantrix, who were displaced when the facility was destroyed.

Architecture

The most shocking thing about the Sanctuary is its location, as it exists in warp space, the same dimension used for the more common (and diminutive) warp lockers available to Faraday City's heroes. Thus, although it doesn't look it at first glance, the Sanctuary is essentially a huge self-sustaining space station, with the apparently blue sky in fact being an artificial projection on the dome of the facility to give it a more Earthlike outdoor feel. However, its unique location gives it a tremendous advantage, since it can be accessed from anywhere that the warp lockers can be accessed, which at a minimum covers Faraday City.

History

How Demetria was able to see to the construction of the Sanctuary is unclear, as it would have taken years to build, and a massive amount of money and resources to carve out an area that immense within warp space. She certainly had access to her own fortune, as well as friends and allies from her time as a hero, but an undertaking of this magnitude would have taken significant resources. The identities of her benefactors are unknown. (As is their reaction to the destruction of the Sanctuary.)
