Phlegethon - River of Fire

Phlegethon is the personification of one of the Rivers of the Underworld, alongside AcheronKokytos, Lethe and Styx. He is a calm yet destructive figure, cleansing all those who cross his path with scorching flame.   Phlegethon is one of the caretakers of the Underworld, assisting Hades and Persephone in the management of the Lands of the Dead. Phlegethon is mainly responsible for ferrying souls through the underworld, specifically to the Fields of Punishment, where Phlegethon is tasked with the torture of the damned.   Like Chthonic Deities, due to Phlegethon’s association with the Underworld and death, he is rarely referred to by name, as it was believed it would call his attention. Therefore he is almost always referred to by epithets, such as “The River of Fire”.

Apperance:

Phlegethon is usually depicted as masculine, which is uncommon for river spirits. Phlegethon is commonly depicted as a dark skinned figure, the colour of brimstone, with mid-length fiery hair and molten eyes.    He is almost exclusively depicted nude.
