Persephone - Queen of the Dead
Persephone is the Goddess of the Afterlife and Spring. Persephone is a kind yet intimidating deity who is capable of both gestures of empathy and wicked retribution.
Persephone is a child of the God of Seasons, Horace, where she gets her domain over Spring, with her mother and sisters, Demeter, Mab and Titania, each representing one of the four seasons.
Persephone is the primary consort of the God Hades, King of the Underworld, who she shares rulership over the Underworld with. Hades oversees the Asphodel Meadows and the Fields of Punishment, with Persephone overseeing the Palace and Elysium.
The union of Hades and Persephone is a well known story. Persephone began courting Hades in secret but they were forbidden to be together by Perseophone’s mother Demeter. Unable to be apart from her love, Persephone ran away to the Underworld to be with Hades. Thinking Hades has kidnapped her daughter, Demeter threw Exorsia into an eternal winter, leading to hundreds of deaths before the Gods came to a compromise. Persephone would spend Spring with her mother on Olympus, and she would spend the rest of the year with her consort Hades in the Underworld.
Because of Persephone’s connection to the Underworld, and the cultural taboo around it, Persephone is usually only referred to by epithets, such as “the Queen of the Dead” or “the Daughter of Spring” as to avoid invoking her or drawing her attention.
Persephone is sometimes worshipped alongside her mother Demeter, specifically in Spring. She is also sometimes beseeched on matters of death or at funerals.
