Katelyn Kerendas

Emperess of Demenia, Queen of Lete Katelyn Elizabeth Kerendas, née Redheart (a.k.a. Katie)

Katelyn Kerendas is the Empress of Demenia and the Queen of Lete, which has been absorbed into the Empire. Katelyn was the oldest of her father's three children and had been trained from a young age to rule the kingdom when her father passed away. She is exceptionally intelligent, and well versed in the skills of statecraft and diplomacy. If Vulcan is the sword arm of the empire, Katelyn is its shield arm. Her ability to negotiate with others helps keep the empire out of wars and still expanding as nobles change allegiance and join the empire.

Personal history

The eldest of King Thanus Redheart's children, Katelyn was born at Thenworth Castle in Heartsport in winter of 1096. She was a precocious girl whose curiosity regularly got her in trouble until her father hired Ankarr Ulmstead, known as Ankarr the Black, to tutor her. Katelyn excelled in learning magic, especially divination and illusion spells, but her real passion as a child was singing and making music. By the time Katelyn was 10 she could play three different instruments and was a budding soprano.   Katelyn had two other sibilings, Amabel Redheart, and Illianna Redheart. Amabel died when Katelyn was very young and Katelyn barely remembers her at all. Illianna was born a year and a half after Amabel's death however, and the two were very close, and they were both doted on by their parents, King Thanus, and Elizabeth Redheart. Illianna and Katelyn did almost everything together, as Thanus believed arming his daughters as much as possible for the world around them, so both received equal education and grooming for the future despite Illianna not being the presumptive heir.   As a teenager Katelyn found her way into the royal court and, after begging her father for a year and a half, began accompanying him on diplomatic missions across the kingdom and even into Lower Lete, more than once. Thanus was a skilled statesman and made sure his daughter learned everything he knew. Indeed, by the time Katelyn was an adult she was acting as her father's envoy all across the kingdom. Throughout her life Katelyn adopted a very noblesse oblige attitude when it came to being royalty. She regularly pushed for reforms and laws that benefited the people of Lete. This benevolence made her extremely popular among the commoners to the chagrin of some less obligated nobles at court. However, Katelyn would not be a door mat. She tempered her benevolence with a firm hand for justice and accountability.   In the summer of 1110 Katelyn's life was put on a course no one in her life could have predicted; she met Vulcan Kerendas. Vulcan was tall, handsome, strong, and smart; all the things most young women find attractive in a young man. In public Vulcan was a serious young man who shared the same noblesse oblige ideals as Katelyn. In private Vulcan was carefree, even funny, and this only served to endear him to her even more. Six months after meeting Vulcan, Katelyn asked her father to give him permission to court her. Thanus refused. He had strongly been considering marrying his daughter off to the second son of Lower Letian King Andrus Blackheart in an attempt to end the blood feud that existed between the two families. Never one to be told no, Katelyn sabotaged the engagement, and the next three her father tried to arrange for her. Finally, at his wits' end and wanting her to be happy, he agreed to let Vulcan court her. The couple were married in 1112 and had a son a little more than a year later, Alexander Kerendas, but the pregnancy was hard on Katelyn, and the young boy died shortly after being born.   During the Fenixian War For Independence Katelyn found herself somewhat despondent. Her husband was at war, and her son was dead. She spent the better part of a year in mourning before finally emerging to reclaim her place by her father's side.

Education

Katelyn was educated by several tutors over the years, including Ankarr the Black. She was taught to read and write several languages, mathematics including geometry and accounting. She tutored under her father's stewards, and his most skilled diplomats to learn statecraft and diplomacy.   Katelyn readily adapted and learned to manage the challenges specific roles and was an especially quick study as a diplomat. By the time she was seventeen the Princess had her own retinue and was working by herself as an envoy, especially to Lower Lete, where she had managed to form a productive relationship with her counterpart at Court.

Employment

Katelyn has worked as an educator, tutoring her sister, a diplomat, and even as the steward of the Pikes while her father was off to war. Katelyn has served on the Green Council, since its inception. She continues to work as a diplomat for the Empire of Demenia as well as handling domestic issues.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Founded the Alexander Charter, an empire wide system of mandatory schooling for its citizens. At each school young citizens learn basic mathematics, as well as learn written and verbal fluency in the Tradetongue and Letian, which is the official language of the empire.   Katelyn was instrumental in the formation of the Green Council and serves as one of its most influential members.   Katelyn is directly responsible for the peace treaties that exist between the Empire and Lower Lete

History

Katelyn and Vulcan courted over several years while Vulcan served her father, Thanus Redheart. Initially the King was against their courtship but Katelyn insisted, and when that didn't work the Princess began sabotaging her father's efforts to betroth her to others.   At this same time Vulcan was doing everything he can to prove his worth to King Thanus to allow him to continue to court Katelyn. Between the two of them they managed to back Thanus into a corner, and their courtship, betrothal, and marriage were all given the King's blessing.

Commonalities & Shared Interests
