Dagavirm

The dagavirm are a race of bipedal large Virment rodents, founds above and around the Burkwild Mountain Range in the Northeast. They are especially known for their creation and use of tools, weapons, culture, society, civilization, science, poetry, food, and firearms. Dagavirm typically come in the shape of dark-furred, bipedal rodents weighing anywhere from around 60 to 150 lbs, and measure any height from 3 to 5½ ft tall. Though the overall shape and size of dagavirm is relatively the same, there are still several key differences which can be found across their ethnic backgrounds. These differences range from the mild fur and eye coloration, to their dietary habits and even lifespan.

Unlike their typical human counterparts, dagavirm live relatively short lives, only reaching around 40 years total for males, and nearly 45 in females. Despite this, dagavirm age and mature very similar to humans mentally, with the typical adult age for a dagavirm being 16 to 19 years old and so on. A dagavirm will usually begin having health issues at the age of 38 and most healthy dagavirm can live approximately to the old age of 44 under the right circumstances. The oldest recorded daga to ever exist, Chek Drowick, was able to live a long and healthy life up to the age of 57.

Biology

Anatomy

Dagavirm anatomical structure is mostly similar to other rodents found in the Virment order, sharing a close ancestry with large tunnel-dwelling field mice and similar dietary patterns to Virmentinid coastal rodents. Like all Virment, dagavirm have 5 opposable digits, including a set of thumbs, fingers, hands and feet which are excellent at digging, grooming, climbing and grasping.

Reproduction

Dagavirm reproduction takes place via internal fertilization from sexual intercourse, with the average gestation period being roughly 5 months. Dagavirm pregnancy is considerably hard on the mother as she must usually give birth to around 2 to 4 children in a litter. Occasionally children will be born alone without a litter of siblings, however this uncommon occurrence only accounts for roughly a quarter of pregnancies, if even that. After going into labor, dagavirm mothers usually require a resting period of approximately 4 days before being able to properly nurse and care for their children.

Helpless at birth, dagavirm children are born blind and furless. Like most creatures of their nature, dagavirm young will slowly gain the ability to see, hear and vocalize high-pitched squeaks after about a year from birth. Most children will then learn how to walk and communicate at the age of two, however some have been reported being able to do this even earlier than that. Once they are old enough to walk, daga children will begin socializing at a higher rate than most species with their peers, usually this is with their close family, more specifically their siblings of their accompanying litter.

By the time a dagavirm child reaches the age of sexual maturity at 9, they will have already fully grown their coat of fur and shed their initial Pre-Coat. After shedding, some dagavirm will have inherited their parents' fur pattern; depending on one's genealogy fur coloration and pattern can vary extensively even within family units and litter groups. After initial curiosities with the body, young attractions, and peer socialization, most courtship and breeding begin roughly around the ages of 16 and 30, however depending on cultural background and environment it can begin as early as 11 to 15.

Ovulation for female dagavirm at the time of sexual maturity roughly occurs over the span of 15 to 16 days, with 5 days of menstruation and 5 to 7 days of fertility. Adolescent females of the age groups between 17 and 28 are by far the most fertile and contribute just over 3/4ths of all total pregnancies. A female will usually enter menopause at 34 and become completely infertile by 36.

Health

Dagavirm are widely-known to have several key health advantages and disadvantages in society due to their separate evolution from humans. Namely, their inability to speak or vocalize words, with even trained vocalist dagavirm exhibiting particularly sturdy throats are still unable to fully mimic human speech, and must rely on sign language and writing to communicate. Their bodies also prohibit them from vomiting correctly to evacuate their stomachs, leaving many dagavirm particularly vulnerable to fatally ingesting poisons or any other harmful contaminant the stomach may face. Some dagavirm, most notably the Vermoni ethnic group, have developed a tolerance to lactose and are able to properly ingest and stomach dairy products produced from other species such as cows.

Genetic Diversity

Due to a quicker rate of growth in populations from a higher concentration of offspring compared to humans, dagavirm ethnic groups were able to sprout up at considerably faster rates than humans according to archeological evidence. It is thought that for within just the 4,000 to 5,000 years the dagavirm were present on Azra before contact with humans was even made, dagavirm were able to spread apart and consolidate into seperate regions and form distinct ethnic groups. Coupled this with their genetic mutation rate being able to keep an inbred bloodline's genetic code healthy for generations, and the sudden formation of distinct ethnic groups belonging to the Lakivir, Vermoni, Kryslogin and others came into existence around 2700 P.H. according to archeologists and scholars. These groups further migrated later, from 500 P.S. to 1100 A.S.

Psychology

Mental Strengths

Dagavirm are known to have excellent minds, and cheerful outlooks due to the way their brain seems to function. With a positive chemical imbalance in their brains, which acts as natural antidepressants when they get stressed, dagavirm seemingly cannot be overcome by stress. A distinct attraction for problem solving has also been observed in dagavirm children and adults, with males especially fixated on studying and probing their enviornments curiously to uncover the inner mechanisms of their surroundings.

Mental Illness

Nowhere more common is the dagavirm mind lost in than it is with socialization and study. For most dagavirm a key interest lies within the discovery of knowledge and the building of relationships with others. A daga is said to be capable of two things when they are thinking, either how to come closer with friends and family, or whichever hobby or interest they want to learn and explore more into. Without proper socialization or the ability to learn, dagavirm have been known to become restless and paranoid. The most unhealthy characteristics of socially-deprived dagavirm adults consist of hyper-fixation, attention disorders, insomnia, and even aggression.

Sociability

Empathy is also a key part of dagavirm psychology as a consequence of their highly social behavior. Nowhere is this empathetical mindset more exemplified than their cultural standing between species with humans. Despite being from very separated cultural and special backgrounds, dagavirm are usually fascinated at the prospect of interacting with humans. This xenophilic behavior is carried out in several functions, with the most common being trade, as dagavirm are very happy to interact and trade with humans, even going as far as to purposely receive unfavorable dealings just to interact further with someone from another species and culture.

Culture

Dagavirm, while known to be a surface-dwelling species like humans, have often preferred to live in underground city-like settlements known as Burrows. Ultimately this preference for habitat comes down to a cultural phenomenon, however some believe dagavirm to be genetically rooted to living in underground spaces on account of their hunched over posture and adept sensory organs. Some evidence is contradictory to this theory however, as in the Western Burrow region there is a contingent cultural desire for many to live in above-ground topside city-scapes.
