Comney

"I tell you the first time I went to Comney, I stood at the edge of the docks looking at the wall of water held back by magic a magic barrier. I looked to be the only one who seemed to notice. A few minutes of terror later and a few drinks, I was off to see the sites. It's good to stare death in the face occasionally. "

Origin

The settlement known as Comney has gone by a few names in its past depending on what it empire it was a part of at the time. The Comney of today is nothing like the Old Comney from before the Frozen Desolation took the surface of Tern. The original parts of Old Comney are said to date back to the Eularis Empire.   When the dwarves of Tern, Clan Ebony Bear, realized the expansion of the Frost Wood wasn't going to stop and their clan was in danger they had to come up with another way to safeguard their people. The sages of the clan and the clan Mother besseched Retick God of the Dwarves, Smithing for wisdom. After a few days of meditation, they emerged with a new ritual. With the new ritual and Dwarven ingenuity they were able to shift parts of the city into the caverns and mines below the city. With the help of the Comney Arcane Sanctum the clan put the ocean behind a barrier and lowered the Comney port below the surface so the city and the clan could maintain its port and access to the rest of Dane. As the clans efforts to save the settlements across Tern the importance of Comeny to Tern for its access to the outside became more and more important, Comney thrived and grew.

Layout

Comney is separated into multiple districts each behind a wall that doubles as a defense in the unlikely event of an invasion and a failsafe in case the ocean barrier fails. Over time each of the districts has adopted a distinct personality and become a center for different aspects of life in Tern.

Port District

The Port of Comney is the key to the success of the city, even during the Age of Isolation the port allowed travel to southern Jote and to the Conclave lands on the edge of the Blainhurst Peaks. The port is the gateway for much of the grains and produce that cannot be grown within Tern as well as shipping out the exports of Tern including the famous Black Ale. The port district is the home of many shipping businesses and seaside taverns.

Marble District

The Marble district of Comney is the largest and most populated section, housing the diligent working clansmen. It also houses the Comney Aleworks and the city Temple of Retick. On the edges of the marble district you can find a handful of small livestock pens for Ekra and the occasional cow or goat. Home of the Copper Hammer

Mithril District

The Mithril District is the next district in housing your close relation to the Clan Father, nobility, successful business families, the Comney Arcane Sanctum , and the finest inns and restaurants, like the Mithril Maelstrom. It is located between the Marble district and the Palace District.

Palace District

The Palace District is the location of the Palace and Clan hall and home of the Clan Ebony Bear Clan Father Thaibor Carrar. It is also the location of the Tern Military Academy and central barracks. The palace district is where Ebony Square is located. Ebony square is where the Mother's Feast is celebrated once a year.

Crossroads District

The Crossroads district is between the Palace and the cavern walls around Comney. This district is where the Raakos pens and Cartworks of Comney are located. It is also where the three tunnel openings are located and connect to the main road and port. This is also where you can find one of Comney's large markets as things come in from all over the kingdom. According to the residents, the Crossroads district houses the best taverns and clubs in Comney, like the Crimson Tale. This is where the citizens that spend long periods in the tunnels go to unwind.

Climate

The cities of Tern have a climate is nearly constant with it being underground however Comney is one of the few cities of Tern that sees any change in weather or seasons. This is due to the opening and access to the sea on one side of the city. Even with this opening the climate still doesn't change much. it maintains a damp 60 degrees on average.

Natural Resources

Comney has primarily become a hub of commerce and doesn't provide nearly the natural resources it did in the beginning. Many of the mines below Comeny have gone dormant with the workforce changing to shipping and trade. Comney does still do a significant amount of the ore processing for the kingdom due to its access to the outside air.
