Saion Rune Tablet

Summer Camp 2021 Article - Under Construction

The Saion Rune Tablet is a stone tablet inscribed with two versions of a historical record about a meeting between two prominent leaders in the year 133 BP. The top text is in Ancient Nagali, while the bottom is in New Ealdorian. The historical record is almost the same in both languages, making it key in deciphering New Ealdorian.

Deciphering

After its discovery by an archeological team in 2895 AP on, the tablet caused a lot of excitement in the world of linguistics. Ancient Nagali was not an easy language to read, and not fully deciphered yet, but there was a potential for deciphering New Ealdorian. It took seven more years before a first breakthrough was made. By a seventeen year old girl no less. Thuya Ebi not only made this first breakthrough, she later became an expert in reading New Ealdorian. Over the course of her life she deciphered many New Ealdorian texts all over the world.

Languages

New Ealdorian

New Ealdorian is very different from Old Ealdorian. The latter uses an elegant script, while the former uses runes which have no curves in them. They are build up of straight lines. Because of this vast difference Old Ealdorian has never been deciphered.

Ancient Nagali

Ancient Nagali was the language spoken by the Nagal civilization which lived in The Southern Sand Plains of East Eghea. It differs from Modern Nagali, which is still spoken in the southern regions of Ghynzua to this day.

Discovery

The tablet was discovered by an archeological team, in the ruined Nagal city Saion in 2895 AP. Situated in The Southern Sand Plains, Saion was once one of the largest cities on the continent. Despite the inhospitable desert the city was build in it thrived for hundreds of years. A few years after The Pulse Saion fell in ruins. Historians believe the city was abandoned because of outbreaks of diseases among the survivors. It was never reclaimed.

Rynn there is a typo, the sidebar says 133BP the text 1133. Otherwise an enjoyable read.

Ahhh I love that you basically made a Rosetta stone here. It's a wonderful idea.

Yes, this is completely inspired by the Rosetta Stone! I was fascinated with ancient Egypt as a child, so I would read as much about it as I could. And the Rosetta Stone always spoke to my imagination. I'm glad I could finally write this article, since the Saion Rune Tablet is already mentioned in an article from SC 2019. Thank you for your comment and like! :)

Really nice take on a Rosetta Stone! Such a cool real-world influence.   I'm also intrigued by the huge differences between new and old Ealdorian. Has the language just drifted really far over time, or does it appear to have changed very drastically very quickly for some reason?

Aug 17, 2021 19:15 by Wendy Vlemings (Rynn19)

Thank you. :) The vast difference between old and new ealdorian is indeed due to a sudden change. There are in world reasons why this happened. I can't share them yet though, since they could be major spoilers if I end up writing the novels that started this worldbuilding project.

Certainly an important tablet! This feels like a very realistic situation that would certainly excite historians and translators! I love the balance of links on this article that take you to elsewhere.
