Old Ealdorian Language in Ealdwyll | World Anvil

Old Ealdorian

Summer Camp 2021 Article - Under Construction

Assumed to be the oldest language in the world, Old Ealdorian was once spoken and written by The Forgotten. It can still be found carved into walls and doorways in many locations once build by the Ealdorians. Good examples can be found in the Frozen Necropolis and in the Library of Sajhdula. The language has not yet been deciphered. It is so different from New Ealdorian, that it is almost as if both languages have very little in common. Yet New Ealdorian is the first language to develop after Old Ealdorian. And it too was a language spoken and written by the Ealdorians. It is a linguistic mystery which still baffles scholars to this day.

Written Old Ealdorian is by far the most elegant script in the world. It is hard to imagine how the Forgotten managed to carve these into stone while still maintaining the beauty of each symbol.

The Language Today

Since no one today speaks this language it is difficult to imagine what it would sound like. Its written form however is something we have many examples of. Every Ageless Tower has at least some carvings and documents written in Old Ealdorian. Rumor has it that the Forbidden Library in Sajhdula houses a large collection of scrolls, manuscripts, and books written in this language. Only a select few people have ever been able to visit this part of the library. None ever spoke about it. Old Ealdorian is considered an extinct language.

Ealdorians

The Ealdorians, also known as the Forgotten, were a species of humanoids who lived thousands of years before the first humans. They were an advanced civilization capable of constructing buildings and items which can not be damaged. This means a lot of what they once created is still around and in perfect condition. Including their writings. Especially those on and in ageless buildings. While Old Ealdorian was used mainly on the continent of West Eghea, New Ealdorian is much more widespread. It was not only used in West Eghea, but can also be found in East Eghea, Ippah, and various other locations all over the world.

Is this the first time you have named the Forgotten Ealdorians? A nice little article, would love to know what their script looks like. Also, the dictionary is driving me nuts. 5 words, but I can only see them if I search the right word :O Excellent article again in making me want to know more about the Forgotten.

Thank you. It's a name I have given them a few years ago. And where the name of this setting comes from. I mentioned it in the article about the Frozen Necropolis. And it also features in the unpublished article about them. I am still struggling with that article because there is so much to mention about them. And I'm not very good with long articles. I also agree about the dictionary. I can only see what words I have put in there when I go in edit mode.

Ooh, I really like that the Forgotten are also Ealdorians! That adds some more depth to the world. I do wonder what happened to them... Great work! :)

Thank you. :) I am working on an article about the species, but I'm not sure when that will go public. Certainly after Summer Camp.

Oooo I love the mystery for sure. I like how its described as this elegant script when written. Adding to the mystery with how they managed to carve it while maintaining that elegance. Well done.

Oo, I love the idea that New Ealdorian came from Old Ealdorian yet is distinctively different from it. That's a nice detail.
