Vúrak

Vúrak is the northernmost city-state of the Jaarels under the Vúrakesen Mountains in western Dragonía, and currently one of the most powerful due to its position near the entrances linking the Jaarel realm with the Útels of Ela'k Forest to the northeast. Its current ruler or jerúvtax is Jirkintex þí-Vúrak os-Jirkintex Þykal, also known simply as Jirkintex III.
The City of Vúrak is among the oldest settlements under the mountains, dating back to nearly eight thousand years, and the one Útels and Ameders further north are most familiar with, to the point that Vúrak is often used among them to refer to Jaarel civilization in general.
Like other major Jaarel powers, Vúrak controls several smaller city-states in the region, such as Jyr, and most conflicts with its neighbours revolve around the control of these nearby states, whether through military actions or more subtle means.

History

For the first few millennia in Jaarel history, Vúrak remained one of the most powerful states under the mountains and founded a number of smaller settlements to provide food, metals and other resources in the surrounding region. As other cities appeared deeper within the caves and some of the early mines were exhausted, Vúrak's power declined, but experienced a renaissance following the The Summer Wars between the Útels and their descendants on the Plain of Spirits, the Móerkels, as the latter lacked a good source of bronze and other metals and thus acquired it from the Jaarels through the Útels.
The country's significance waned once more after first contact and trade with the reptilian Kroks were established on the other side of the mountains, shifting the power towards the western city-states, a situation made worse as political instability amongst the Útels -caused by The Dragon- disrupted further trade with them for a long time. After the Dragon ceased terrorizing the people of Dragonía half a millennium later, Vúrak now thrives as a vital link in a major trade-route between Vorran Peninsula on one hand and the rest of the world on the other.
