Narans

Nartasic: Naram /naːram/
Hritt: Narpá /naːrphauː/
The narans1 are the people of Nar-Tasí in the eastern Sjorg Desert of southwestern Dragonía, and one of the most powerful groups of Krekkúxes, Gobíl people who have ruled much of the region since the fall of the Órax Empire. They are notable for being one of the few krekkúxans who managed to resist the Óraxes for millennia, through a combination of elite warrior, imposing fortifications and occasional aid from neighbouring Kóhans from the Múlíat Mountains to the east.
Narans are known for their skilled potters, sculptors and cuisine.

Culture

Apparel

Naran clothing is similar to that of other krekkúxan cultures, particularly northern- and northeastern ones, though with some influences from neighbouring kóhans as well, such as cloth dyed with lapis lazuli. Solar- and animal imagery -especially depictions of fish- is common, with serpents being especially common on children's clothing as an apotropaic device, as the animals are associated with the earth god Kexa.

Art

Pottery

Narans have long known for their fine pottery, with wares decorated with distinct pink slip being particularly sought after in the Sjorg Desert and the Múlíat Mountains alike. Less prestigious, though nonetheless popular, is their pottery painted in black and violet.

Cuisine

Traditional naran diet is heavily based on fish from Pastrjú Lake to the west, mutton and tail fat, the meat of domesticated Sjerg Antelopes and wild game, as well as saffron and a few local herbs and spices, including pert berries endemic to the region between the lake and the mountains, which are fed to sheep when in season to give the meat a pleasant flavour.
The signature dish of Nar-Tasí is known as hákk, which is made by adding a spice mixture into sjerg antelope blood, letting it coagulate and then cut into pieces, usually served with slow-cooked bone marrow.

Language

Nartasic is an isolate within the Krekólic languages, written using an alphabet similar to the Óraxan one, as both are derived from ones used by the Kóhans. It has notably fewer letters than most such alphabets, and features a phoneme which is rare for Gobíl languages in general, namely /s/ instead of the more usual /ʃ/.

Religion

The main deities of the naran pantheon are the sky goddess Krekk, the earth god Kexa, and Úrerx, patron deity of Nar-Tasí depicted as a beast with a feline body, the head and neck of a bird, and a toothed beak shaped like an axe-head. The latter is unique to the narans, and believed to have either lead their ancestors to their current home from the Múlíat Mountains or emerged from Pastrjú Lake to welcome them when they arrived there.
Cremation is the norm, traditionally done at night.
