An

Jaarelic: An /aːn/
An is one of the city-states of the Jaarels beneath the Vúrakesen Mountains in western Dragonía, located under the northeastern part of the mountains.
Much like its ancient rival Vúrak to the north, An has long remained an important link between the settlements deeper within the caves on one hand and the Útels of Ela'k Forest on the surface on the other, as one of the tunnels leads directly to the Gate of Nólar, one of the three eastern entrances to the Jaarel realms.
The city which the kingdom is named after is located on an island in the middle of a vast underground lake, source of the river Genyt which meanders through the cave system and finally drains into the Ilkigit Sea to the south. It provides the inhabitants with plenty of fish, crustaceans and giant salamanders, which form the core of An's cuisine along with domesticated artas, insects and mushrooms.
Early in its history, the city had a cramped and chaotic layout until an early jerúvtax or king by the title of Gatrex II remodeled the city by dividing it into clearly defined residential, industrial and agricultural sectors in 5600 b.Dr, with the latter two moved to the shores of the lake.
As a result, the island acts a kind of acropolis housing the aristocracy and skilled craftsmen, while miners, farmers and fishermen live and work in villages all around the lake. In ancient times, the people of An used canoes bought from the Útels to travel back and forth from the island, a practice long since rendered obsolete by a network of stone bridges connecting the city to the main settlements by the shore and tunnels beyond.
Much like Vúrak, An now forms an important part of the trade-route between the reptilian Kroks living on Vorran Peninsula on the other side of the mountains and the rest of Dragonía, with tree silk, rare spices and lightstones from the peninsula being traded in exchange for such goods as wine, honey, rabbit- or hyrning wool cloth from the Útels and Ameders.
