Corsico

Milan in 2032.
The neighborhood in which the game begins is Corsico, a small but densely packed area on the outskirts of the former militarized zone of Milan. It is about 2 miles square but houses about 30,000 people, which approximately the population density of modern-day Hoboken, New Jersey.   The area has very Mediterranean weather, with hot, muggy summers averaging around 80F, and mild winters that rarely see extended dips below freezing. It tends to be clear more often than overcast, with average rainfall and almost no snow, though the fallout from the space rock impacts has messed with the weather in recent years, dropping temperatures and changing the pH of the rain. Still, because the weather is relatively nice for most of the year, quite a lot of people who can’t afford to pay rent sleep in the street, on rooftops, or in local parks.   Corsico, like the rest of the Milan region, was originally settled by Gallic Celts around 600 BC and conquered by the Romans in 222 BC, so the area has been constantly inhabited for millennia. The village was clearly not built with cars in mind, as the streets are barely wide enough for two cars to pass abreast and are paved with good old-fashioned cobblestone through much of the area. Though the layout is old, most of the buildings are not; even the oldest ones were clearly built no earlier than the 19th century and consist mostly of low-rise apartment buildings with shopfronts on the ground floor. The oldest remaining building in the town is the Church of St. Peter and Paul, built in 1850 over the remains of a 14th century medieval church.   Being so urbanized even before everything went nutso, Corsico was heavily contested throughout the 90’s and 2000’s and saw a lot of street-level warfare, resulting in the destruction of a lot of the old buildings and cobblestone streets. Those buildings that were destroyed have been replaced in the last decade or so with cramped modern buildings that are a minimum of seven floors tall, with many going up ten or twelve floors and some that have twenty floors or more. These are most heavily concentrated on the border with Milan where the fighting was most destructive, though they dot the landscape all across the city.   For all that the city is so close to Milan and so densely packed for its size, it is relatively quiet compared to other urban areas. Street lamp coverage is spotty, but the neon lights of shop signs and billboards keeps the neighborhood lit all through the night. Doors and windows on the first two or three levels are uniformly barred, and parking lot or garage entrances are all gated, but nearly every apartment has a small balcony and residents make good use of them to escape the muggy heat indoors.

Demographics

Corsico was already fairly multicultural before the refugee crises, but the 2000’s and 2010’s saw it become one of the most multicultural neighborhoods in Milan. Looking to escape the bloodshed, native Milanese either moved deeper into the city or further into the outer ring, leaving Corsico one of the few Milan neighborhoods where there was significant space for refugees to settle. And settle they absolutely did - there are significant populations of Soviets, Eastern Europeans, Northern Africans, Middle Eastern, Near East, Far East and Southeast Asians, and North Americans. Though Italians still make up the largest chunk of the populace, they are now a statistical minority, making up only about 35% of the Corsichesi population.

Government

Corsico is run by a mayor and a handful of city officials out of a small City Hall.

Infrastructure

Having historically belonged to the Province of Milan and later the Metropolitan City of Milan, Corsico had relied heavily on Milan's help for the construction and maintenance of its infrastructure. Since the militarization, however, it has not received that assistance consistently, and as a result the city has struggled to maintain its infrastructure to the extent that it used to.
